Colbert Lampoons Bush at White House Correspondents Dinner--

President Does Not Seem Amused

WASHINGTON A blistering comedy “tribute” ...

He attacked those in the press who claim that the shake-up at the White House was merely re-arranging
the deck chairs on the Titanic. “This administration is soaring, not sinking,” he said. “They are
re-arranging the deck chairs--on the Hindenburg.”

He noted former Ambassador Joseph Wilson in the crowd, as well as " Valerie Plame." Then, pretending
to be worried that he had named her, he corrected himself, as Bush aides might do, "Uh, I mean...
Joseph Wilson's wife." He asserted that it might be okay, as prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was
probably not there.

Colbert also made biting cracks about missing WMDs, “photo ops” on aircraft carriers and at hurricane
disasters, and Vice President Cheney shooting people in the face.Observing that Bush sticks to his
principles, he said, "When the president decides something on Monday, he still believes it on
Wednesday - no matter what happened Tuesday."

Addressing the reporters, he said, "You should spend more time with your families, write that novel
you've always wanted to write. You know, the one about the fearless reporter who stands up to the
administration. You know-- fiction."

NBC's Washington bureau chief Tim Russert defended Bush's comments, explaining on the Today show (3/26/04) that while Democrats and military families might be critical, "rather than be judgmental, let me just step back. Ironically, for me the exact same joke was told to me two weeks ago by a very rabid anti-war Democrat. In the context of that evening, after the president made those jokes, he had very emotional comments about the military in Iraq.... So if you look at the evening in the totality, the people who were there I don't think came away with some of the same conclusions as people who just heard snippets on the radio or television."

15. It was stunning...here's my take. Thanks for your work out there.

Colbert came in totally in character, just like he's been with everyone for the past few weeks.

The level he reached with the Kristol interview should have tipped people off. Kristol, no
slouch and a skilled liar, looked frightened form the first moment of the interview. Colbert
happy talked him and then dropped the bomb: So hows the PNAC thing going? Kristol's face flushed
and he paused and lost even more composure.

Tonight, Colbert was in even better form. He came with his script and tape. Two opening jokes
went over with the audience to a degree but after that, the jokes, invectives really, were greeted
with mostly silence. The only willing participant was Justice Scalia, who seems to enjoy being
know for flipping the bird. He and Colbert vibed out, it seemed. Perhaps Scalia appreciated the
"fuck you" in a grand way sent by Colbert to the crowd.

Colbert did a tape about his fantasy role as Press Secretary. Introducing his special podium, the
tape showed a control panel with "Silence Thomas" and "Gannon" on it. We saw "Gannon" twice. This
sent a chill, no doubt. Then Colbert, as Press Secretary, was pursued by Helen Thomas who was wonder
ful in the Colbert tape

After that, there was no mercy by Colbert and no laughs by the assemblage, save the token liberals.

I worried that nobody seemed to laugh at all as did my wife. Then I noticed that Colbert looked
simply terrific, total control, not a drop of sweat on him. He was enjoying himself as he delivered
devastating criticisms of the assemblage (who seemed like the aristocrats in Dr. Zhivago).

It was just brutal, a great moment that only television can capture.

Colbert finished up and * was forced to shake his hand. The right wingers left in a hurry. Helen
Thomas was Colbert's first contact after he finished. They hugged and she was all smiles. They hung
around on th podium. George Clooney worked the crowd well after the event and seemed to be having a
great time. Nobody else was having much fun besides those three. I'm sure Jesse Jackson, also a
guest, was smiling inside.

See the tape, great, great moment. This guy is a warrior.

Colbert was brilliant. It was funny to see how uncomfortable most of the people were with his skewering. Hardly a laugh in the place, but he hammered home his message in an unequivocal manner. Great stuff. Although I also laughed at the Bush twin. He was pretty funny.

I watched till the bitter end of the event. Colbert was standing near Helen Thomas, and Bush passed them on the way out. Laura had nothing to do with him.. she gets all pissy when anyone criticizes her little man, but Bush purposefully and nicely gave Colbert a physical greeting of sort as he left the table area.. sort of a squeeze/pat on the arm. He did NOT stiff Colbert as he walked by.

One way to look at it is at this moment, in that place, * fully realized just how screwed he is.
I suspect that, like all naughty boys who are about to be caught, he's in some real big trouble
(maybe Rove got the letter, "you're being indicted") and * is totally distracted at the thought
of his empire crumbling.

The real show was Colbert...a moment of pure courage and genius. To have that opportunity
is one thing (extraordinary), to pull it off with style, panache, and grace, is another.

Colbert was the "total package" tonight. Danm...

Wilson and (covert) Plame was in the audience , now who in this blog would take their wife to a roast of the guy (bush) that outed his wife? It does not make sense. There would only be ONE reason I would want to be there if he outed my wife, and thats to kick his ass all over the place and I'm not a big fighter.

If I knew I couldn't kick his ass all over the place in reality without being shot in the head, I might find some satisfaction in knowing the man was about to have his ass handed to him rhetorically, and seeing that, in person, would be quite satisfying to me. I'm not sure if you noticed, but they were a part of the act, not as big a part as Helen Thomas was, but a part. They knew what was coming, and they reacted accordingly.

I've been known to show up at places where I knew people I loathed would be, just because I knew it would make them uncomfortable. I can see something like that at work here.
