The first few jokes were innocent... then Stephen opened fire with both barrels and started clowning Bush & Co and the Press and Scalia and others...

Those folks in the audience looked incredulous.

nervous actually, afraid to laugh because Colbert so thoroughly spanked BushCo. Everyone knows Georgie doesn't like criticism and they walk on eggshells when they're around him so as not to draw his famous temper out. Screw 'em. Colbert tore the entire facade off the Bush regime in one felled swoop.

Colbert artfully showed that the Emperor truly has no clothes and people just couldn't handle the avalanche of truth.
