Stephen Colbert, You Are My Hero!!
Reported by Marie Therese - April 29, 2006

Tonight Stephen Colbert reaffirmed my faith in - well - just about everything. In a scheduled appearance at the White House Correspondents Dinner, broadcast live on C-SPAN, he used his now-famous impersonation of a right-wing talk show host to land barb after barb at everyone in the Bush administration. It was a marvel. The man has guts, folks, because right now in Right Wing Land thousands of fingers are frantically clackety-clacking away, writing insults to post on their favorite conservative websites. They are also dialing right-wing talk shows to call Mr. Colbert every name in the book, threaten him with death and accuse him of besmirching and disrespecting the office of the President of the United States. As for FOX News, expect an avalanche of apoplectic invective come Monday (maybe tomorrow?). Editor & Publisher has already chimed in with its two cents, claiming that the President was not amused.

Thankfully, political comedy is alive and well and tonight Stephen Colbert gave the Washington elite a huge dose of the truth wrapped in humor. He was refreshing, clear-voiced and committed as he delivered the "news and commentary" with the same tart wit we have all come to know and love.

His performance was especially telling coming as it did after a schizophrenic and bizarre routine in which the President stood at the podium next to an impersonation of himself, skillfully done by comedian Steve Bridges.

The President would say a few perfunctory things and then his doppelganger would let the audience in on what he was "really" thinking. There were funny moments but the total effect was eerie. It was as if Bridges was the Court Jester for King George. I found the whole thing dissonant and surreal.

If you'd like to drop a note to Mr. Colbert, you can use the Comedy Central online form. They will forward your comments to him.

You can catch him on 60 Minutes tonight, Sunday, April 30, 2006.

1. I wonder if he's restocking his Formula 401.
After his brilliant performance, there no doubt will be a surge in demand.

2. That and for his book....
The unwieldy and silly name of which escapes me right now...

I think the Wingnuts are just upset that they don't have the kind of talent to pull off an appearance like that.

5. We should, and I'm sure we all will, give him our support...
Who knows what flak the Republicans in power at the various media HQ's are going to want to try to spring on him. Hopefully the fact that he is a political comedian will give him sufficient immunity, but we need to show our support anyway.

That King George wasn't pleased is... well, very pleasing!

However, like an elephant--Shrub never forgets those who cross him--and being the older version of the spoiled little rich kid with enormous power at his disposal, as well as being known for being vindictive--makes our immature, annoying, assinine, aristocratic pretend President a dangerous fellow. Will he seek revenge? Will others of the self-righteous Republican class seek to do it for him?

I hope such thoughts are needless and everyone can take a joke gracefully and just laugh it off. Alas, knowing Republicans, I'm not so confident.

At any rate, not that many Republicans (and others) will even know how Bush was skewered; they're (at the very least "they" means the news media) pretending it didn't even happen--as indicated by reporting that actually ignores most of Colbert's barbs (effectively all that had any reference to Bush himself--and that's most of them). Of course, psychological "denial" (of reality) is something they (Republicans) are world class masters at.

is satire! Dumbasses that they are. Boy, were they in for a surprise! I checked their posts and they were going nuts.

14. How could they not know that he is a satirist?

One would have to be as dumb as a stick to...

Ahem, sorry. I forgot who you were refering to.

10. just sent mine, too

I just wanted to send a note of accolades to Mr. Colbert for his excellent performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner.

It's always refreshing to hear someone speak the truth, even if that truth is presented in satire form. Thanks very much, Mr. Colbert, for having the cojones to point out the glaring hypocrisy of the WH press.

Best Regards,
xx

8. brilliant!

It was so funny watching the crowd sink lower and lower and Colbert beat them into the ropes. At the end, the 'polite' applause was very telling. The illuminati were not amused. Ah, poor babies. Truth hurts, don't it?
