Iranian forces enter Iraq, shell Kurdish guerrillas

BAGHDAD - Baghdad on Sunday accused Iranian forces of having over the last 24 hours entered Iraqi territory and shelled Kurdish PKK guerrillas in the northern Arbil province.

“Iranian forces hit a border area called Haj Umran and then entered five kilometers into Iraqi territory and hit the area of Lollan with heavy artillery with 180 shells targeting PKK positions,” it said.

No casualty figures were immediately available.

The attack is the second Iranian offensive against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party guerilla group (PKK) in 10 days. The group is fighting for the creation of an independent Kurdish state in southeastern Turkey.

We are not in the position at this time to get into one and even Rummy knows it.

where are the independent reports? just Iraqi accusations at this point I think.

I wonder what PPK's activities were surrounding the action. Iran is in active defense of it's borders from several fronts.

what about the thread title? fact or not?

6. US troops have been running discreet manuevers just over the Iranian
border from Iraq. This is the next logical step in turning up the heat. An overt attack on Iran proper will start as a "hot pursuit" of Iraqi insurgents seeking refuge over the border in Iran.

7. Rice signals stronger anti-PKK effort
http://www.turkishweekly.net/news.php?id=30660

Beginning her daylong stop in Ankara yesterday, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signalled a stronger commitment to eliminate the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) presence in northern Iraq, but opposed any unilateral move by Turkey for a cross-border operation.

Referring to dormant trilateral mechanism established last year between the U.S., Turkey and Iraq against the PKK, Rice said, "We need to reinvigorate those trilateral mechanisms to deal with the PKK problem. We want to do it in a way that does not cause greater instability in the north (of Iraq)."

Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul tried to ease the concerns of Washington, telling a joint press conference that Turkey has no designs for another country's territory. "Turkey's recent military buildup in southeastern Anatolia has been misunderstood by some in the media. It is a normal operation against recent attacks by PKK," he said, adding that Turkey strongly supports the political process in Iraq and development of a strong new government in Baghdad and does not want to ruin this process.

Rice met with her Turkish counterpart Gul, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday, which according a high-level Turkish diplomat was a "very successful visit to restore mutual confidence between the two allies."
