Met Mike Malloy Last Night At The Forum On Impeachment In Sacramento !!!
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 01:37 PM by WillyT
It was a block or two away from the California Democratic Convention happening here this weekend.

Here are the people who were on the forum:

Representative Maxine Waters

Assemblyman Paul Koretz who just introduced AJR 39 calling for state initiated impeachment against George Bush and Dick Cheney

Shayana Kadidal, lead attorney, Center for Constitutional Rights, and co-author, Articles of Impeachment Against George W. Bush

Elizabeth de la Vega, former lead prosecutor, San Jose and author of an upcoming book on impeachment

Bob Fertik, President, Democrats.com & co-founder afterdowningstreet.org

Mike Malloy, syndicated host of AirAmerica Radio, will moderate

Opening statement by Tim Goodrich, founder, Iraq Veterans Against the War.

Now people were lined up down the street way before the doors opened, and the place filled up completely shortly there after. There were delegates from the convention, members of the California Progressive Caucus, Green Party members, and hundreds of pissed off Americans.

Got to meet Mike shortly before the forum started, and he's a real great guy. Told me, "I hope I don't screw this thing up, LOL" And... apparently here on the west coast, where his show starts at 10:00 pm local time, he has amassed thousands of fans since he's been on AAR. When he ENTERED the room he was applauded and cheered. When he walked up to the podium, he received about a 4 minute standing ovation. Somebody asked him if he had his icepick with him, and he smiled and fake stabbed himself in the thigh to rounds of laughter and applause.

He was a real pro, and made the forum about the guests, and the possibilities and problems with going forward with Impeachment. He also kept the crowd (with which you could feel the anger out there) from overrunning the thing, with both humor and aplomb. His first words were, "It starts here, in places like this, with people like you. It always has." Brought the place to its feet once again.

All the guests were fantastic, and very informative. The place was pretty rowdy, but good natured-ly so, and the guests and Malloy couldn't help but smile and laugh evey now and again from the 'help' they were receiving from members of the audience. The Iraqi Vet, Tim Goodrich, was very impressive with his stories of turning from a guy who was 3 tours in the ME and a Bush supporter, to an anti-war activist who went back to Iraq to see what damage we had really done there, to a guy working on a progressive Democrat's campaign, co-founding the group Iraq Veterans Against the War, and supporting Impeachment and removal of the very President he had voted for.

And one of the leaders of the California Democratic Party Progressive Caucus, a woman named Joye Swan, was equally awesome. And when I say leader, keep this person's name somewhere in the back of your head, because this lady could run for office and win in a heartbeat. Smart, beautiful, articulate, funny, PhD... can't sing her praises enough here. She told how she was granted time with Senator Feinstein recently, and was allowed to be frank. She asked some very uncomfortable questions of DiFi, and said that when she did, the 7 or 8 suits in the room started nervously jumping in to justify their Senator's responses as necessarily strategic in nature. Supposedly DiFi agreed with everything Dr. Swan was saying, but had taken counsel of caution from her advisers. Dr. Swan reminded the Senator, "...that if you do the right thing, you can never be wrong."

Well... that's about it for now, if I remember any other great stories from last night, I'll add them here, and if ya got any questions, put 'em here too, and I'll do my best ta fill ya in!

Ciao...

WillyT

5. Yeah, I have a question. When Koretz was interviewed by Randi Rhodes,
a couple of days ago, she asked him--with astonishment--how could the CA Dems in the Sen/Assembly (which have a 2 to 1 majority) NOT support a bill of impeachment against Bush/Cheney? He explained that many CA legisl Dems are working on "bipartisan" proposals that they don't want to endanger, ergo the Dem Party leadership in the legisl may not go for it. This is a new Dem legisl leadership (the old guard retired last year), and I'm aware of what they did to Kevin Shelley, our former Sec of State who sued Diebold and decertified the worst of their election theft machines prior to the 2004 election--they hid under their desks while the fascists swiftboated him, and some colluded with Scharzenegger to put an appointed Diebold shill into that office, Bruce McPherson.

My question: What was the tenor/content of the meeting re: the Dem leadership and Dem majority in the CA Senate and Assembly? What is the buzz on their excuses for not impeaching Bush/Cheney, and how to overcome their collusiveness?

12. Not Sure If I Know Enough To Answer That, But...
I can tell you this. Although there were many at this forum who you'd expect, there were many more who've come to realize what's at stake here. I was surprised to see the number of delegate badges folks were wearing at this forum. Usually at this time of night, the convention activities are done, and most folks are drinking in the hospitality suites, or off to dance the night away.

I believe that many delegates are pressuring the Dems, and I suspect a few movers and shakers snuck into the forum sans badges, to see if this anger is real, or just overblown hype. And I really hope that they did, because Malloy, Waters, Koretz, various attending staff et/al. were just as blown away as we all were with the palpable anger at our leaders, and at the same time the earnest drive to change this reality by action.

As Proud Patriot reported above, Koretz finished by saying that... "We are all passengers on Flight 93, the entire country. And it's time to rush the cockpit door and get the controls back, before they take the entire country to its doom!"

Hope that helps...

20. Thanks so much for the report and this response! Very grateful for it!
And it is very heartening! It's time for the real Democrats to stand up--those who truly represent the interests of this country and its people--and for the corrupt and the collusive to stand down.

11. OH CRAP !!! - Almost Forgot !!!
And ProudPatriot, check me out on this...

It was surmised, hinted at, suggested... and I use those words because it was discussed after Maxine Waters had to leave for another engagement, and after something she had said... that if one of the state Impeachment maneuvers (Vermont, Illinois, California, etc.) made it to a member of the Judiciary Committee, that one of those members would introduce the bill. The supposition was that it would be her!

She said the rePukes may kill it, but it will get more and more people discussing it, and it will put the rePukes and their administration on notice that they are going to be held to account sooner or later.

Did I get that right Trish???

15. It's my understanding of Jefferson's Manual that any state legislature may
introduce a bill of impeachment to the U.S. House of Reps, without any assistance of a member, and that it is a privileged bill--that is, a bill that stops all other Congressional business until it is considered. Now, I'm sure support from members of Congress wouldn't hurt--especially re how the Bush "pod people" handle it, once it is submitted. But to get it submitted does NOT require a House member submitting it. Maxine Waters may be thinking more about its ultimate fate--that is, what the House does in response to it--that's where she and other House members can help. Whatever that fate is, the mere submission of such a bill by a state legislature would an unprecedented, historic action, and "the shot heard round the world" as far as the Bush junta is concerned. The entire nation would stand up and cheer! As would the entire world!

As a native Californian, and a forty-year loyal Calif Democratic Party member, who remembers bird-dogging precincts for the Calif Democratic Council (the leftists of that era) in the 1960s, I would love to see California be the first state that does it--but would be more than happy for the great states of Illinois or Vermont--or others!--to be the first, or for a coalition of states to do it. Illinois gave us Patrick Fitzgerald, after all. And Vermont has been kicking fascist butt since the founding of the republic.

What a joy it will be!

And Paul Koretz's metaphor--we're all passengers on Flight 93 now, and it's time to storm the cockpit--sent thrills up my spine. Our country is headed for disaster, and we MUST act.

Americans--probably because of our relative prosperity--have always been slow to disturb the realm, even with just provocation. But when we DO get our dander up, the cheats and criminals and liars and warmongers and torturers who would use our nation's virtues of freedom and faith in each other for fascist ends, and to fatten their own piggish wealth, had better head for the exits. The American people are FED UP!

17. Well Said !!! - I Couldn't Agree More !!!
I believe what was being suggested, was that she (and possibly others) would be willing to support it.

IOW - Introduce it in the Judiciary, or co-sponsor it, or something to that effect.

18. Oh... And Another Vingette...
During an intermission, I walked down to the stage to kinda gage the crowd, and see if Proud Patriot was gonna get ta meet the man.

On the way down the aisle, a couple of women in front of me were discussing the fact that Mike hadn't used his standard line, "Have I mentioned lately how much I hate these people?"

The women were plotting a way for us all to get this chant going, when Mike called us all back to order.

A few moments later, because of time constraints, he asked the forum participants a closing question on dealing with Impeachment, and the BUSH CRIME FAMILY. Again the crowd went wild. Mike just smiled and said, "Ok. Ya want me to do the other one, don't you?"

And he did, and the entire crowd shouted it out with him in unison!

Whatta night it was, LOL!!!

:bounce::kick::bounce:

And BTW - Proud Patriot did get ta meet the man. And... he gave a hello to my mom!

:woohoo:
