12. There was Michael Moore a couple of years ago

during the Oscars (though, of course Bush wasn't present; and I'm not a real fan of Michael Moore anyway).

I think what people are forgetting is that Colbert is an entertainer who was supposed to roast Bush for this occasion. He managed to make some good political commentary -- especially about the meek media, but in the end, it's just a roast.

I don't need to personally know Stephen Colbert at all to tell that he considers himself more of an entertainer than a political commentator.

It goes beyond what a person is (documentary film maker, comedian, pundit, etc.) It is about a citizen speaking truth to power and pointing out the hypocrisy and lies directly to the people that make them and perpetuate them.

Colbert was the first. If folks are upset with that, and/or cannot handle that he was-- this speaks more about them than Colbert.

What he said was incredibly pointed...it would have been so even in another time when critical, political satire was more prevelant in our society. Today it's virtually non-existent.

He got in several direct hits on the hypocricy, lies, and stupidity of the Bush junta, the military/political elites, and the corporate-owned media without pulling his punches once. When was the last time we saw something like that, particularly right in front of a captive audience of the country's political and social elite?

Perhaps DU'ers are going a bit off the deep end in their glee over Colbert's performance...but, God Almighty, it's been six fucking years of a bootlicking press, a cowed media in general, a distracted and manipulated population, and the damn fascistic elite in this country pissing on 100 years of social progress.

Allow us a fricking laugh and a moment of celebration for someone finally saying to these aristocratic assholes what we've all been saying to each other for years, why don't you?
