I think the M$M will try to ignore Colbert's performance.
They think (perhaps correctly) that since it was only on C-Span most people had no idea it even happened. They will focus on the pResident's double and how funny he and the pResident were, and - oh yeah, Colbert was also there.

I think that is how they will treat it. Colbert was an "also there".

Of course, there is e-mail. Be sure to send links of Colbert's brilliant performance to everyone you know.

6. Just like they do every other
WHCD speech.

Here's the typical WCD article from the last decade.

The president poked some fun at himself yesterday at the ___ annual WHCD. Insert joke told by president here.

The annual event brings together luminaries from journalism, politica and entertainment, and this year was no exception as Hulk Hogan sat with the Speaker of The House and the inventor of the silicon micro-chip at one table.

_______ was the featured entertainer.

__________ of the ____________ newspaper won the group's award for best story of the year, and ________________ won the award for best photo of the year.

WashPost article, which gives more weight to the embarrassment of the dueling dubyas, for one

there are some msnbc stories, too, as well as TV BS, which largely ignore Colbert altogether

4. This will bubble up from the blogosphere
from places like DU and Daily Kos, until the buzz becomes unignorable in the MSM.

12. EXACTLY! And I think we should do everything we can to keep it
boiling and bubbling!

For instance, several have already suggested we begin refering to Freepers as "backwash". I say let's begin doing this in everyday conversations. When someone asks what you mean by backwash - "oh, you haven't seen it? Here, let me send you a link...."

Remember, WE and those like us are the blogosphere. Let's make sure this CAN'T be ignored!

7. Like Kerry's smackdown of the swiftliars at the Firefighters Convention
speech Aug 2004. It NEVER happened because the media decided to not cover it. Or Rove made their decision for them.

11. Even C-SPAN did that.
All they showed today was the rather sickening twin act. Maybe I missed it, but they certainly weren't playing up Colbert's smackdown of *. :(

17. I meant when the host was talking about the dinner at the beginning of
Washington Journal. He just showed clips of the twin act. I actually saw Colbert later on C-SPAN but it was part of the entire program.

14. My personal opinion,
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 05:26 PM by pnorman
having just watched the complete 2 part on-line version, is this: I laughed of course, but it wasn't all that funny. Clearly, Colbert LOATHED that murderous creep, just as much as almost all do here. But that made it almost impossible for him to be genuinely "humorous". Perhaps Al Franken might have been able to have carried it off, but Al Franken would NOT have been given the opportunity. Had it been ANYONE besides that Bush creep, it might have been considered "cheap shots" and in "bad taste". But Bush so richly DESERVED it.

Not being a TV watcher, I knew very little about Colbert --- until now. My guess is that up till now, he wasn't so overtly "political". Please correct me if I'm wrong. But in any event, he's Aces High in my books. He displayed pure COURAGE. Lets hope he shames all the rest into following his example.

16. He does this stuff every night on his show
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 05:09 PM by supernova
but last night, SC put himself on a adifferent plane entirely. And from my perspective, he wasn't trying to be funny. Although he used humor, that was just a means to a larger end. He wanted to say those things to the [resident's face and that persona let him do that.

23. "from my perspective, he wasn't trying to be funny"
That's about what I was trying to say. It's as though he had had a belly full of Bush and had openly declared war on him, and all he stood for --- REGARDLESS of consequences. Is that consistent with his past actions?

20. Franken already got his chance
Don't remember which year, but I remember he was very funny. Lots of groans from the audience as he poked fun at the republicans in the audience. I remember especially him pointing out how many of the family values Republicans in the audience were with their second wives.

This is the kind of humor that skewers to the core.
