Trojan Implosion OFFICIAL Watch thread!!!
Edited on Sun May-21-06 01:14 AM by Viva_La_Revolution
It comes down tomorrow at 7am Pacific time!

GOODBYE!! to a local eyesore and costly hazard!!

By Dan Tilkin
and KATU.com Web Staff
RAINIER, Ore. - On May 21, history will be made when the cooling tower at the old Trojan power plant along the Columbia River is brought down.

Demolition crews are busy getting ready for the big day and are now halfway through the process of loading up the tower with explosives.

More than 3,300 holes have been drilled into the concrete, holes that have been, or will be, filled with a nitroglycerin-based dynamite.

The local news channels are all a-buzz. :)

on edit: A personal note.

I moved to Oregon almost 10 years ago, and one of the first "road trips" I took with my boys happened to be on the Salmon river. The tower was a shock. I had no idea that it was even there, let alone the history of the plant.

My most vivid memories of that trip seem to have melded together. We found the decomposing bones of a dog, wrapped in a trash bag, along side the road. We saw dead Salmon floating in the river, and we saw the Trojan tower looming over it all. Now, the logical side of my brain knows that none of these incidents are connected...(the Salmon were dead because they had finished spawning, and the dog bones were something we could probably find along any rural road), but the boys were young (It was the trip where my middle son learned to fish, he was 6.) and we still cannot get that image of that tower looming over the whole trip.

After researching the history of the Trojan plant, I can not say I am sad to see it come down.

11. Oh yeah, I'll miss it
Like you miss the pain of a bad toothache. Which is to say, not at all.

They talked to one guy who said it would be a little weird not to see the cooling tower there for about a week, and then a new mental landscape would take its place and folks wouldn't miss it at all.

For me, it was always just a little disconcerting to see it on my forays north to Seattle and rare trips to the coast on Highway 30.
