More than the media loves Republicans, they love Novelty Republicans. Novelty Republicans like McCain ("Wow, look, a Republican who went to war and sometimes disagrees with the president!"), Guiliani ("Wow, look, a Republican from New York who's pro-choice and pro-gay and didn't make a fool of himself on 9/11!!") and, naturally, Rice ("Wow, look, a Republican who's a woman AND black!!! OMFG!!!!!!"). Spotlighting these people in an endlessly hagiographic fashion promotes the illusion that Republicans are really a "big tent" party and papers over the fact that they're primarily - and increasingly - the party of white Southern Christian conservative men - ie Bush, DeLay, Frist, Allen, Gingrich, Reed etc.
Rice is an even better Novelty GOPer than her predecessor, Colin Powell, who if you remember back to the Nineties, was also the subject of presidential and vice-presidential rumors, speculation about how he'd bring blacks into the Republican fold blah blah blah. The difference is Powell wasn't completely a product of the Bushostocracy and showed discernible signs of independence and competency from time to time. Because Rice doesn't, she presumably has more of a chance to rise to the top in today's Republican party. More likely, she, McCain and Guiliani will end up much like Powell today: a political has-been who gets trotted out at the RNC every four years.
