GET THIS: "Christian Global Warming Policy: An Evangelical Response"
Christian Global Warming Policy News Conference: National Press Club, Tuesday, July 25

Contact: Lou Priebe, 703-569-0946, Priebe.L@ATT.net

WASHINGTON, July 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- Amid mounting controversy among evangelical Christians over global warming and climate policy, the Interfaith Stewardship Alliance will present “A Call to Truth, Prudence and Protection of the Poor: An Evangelical Response to Global Warming” at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 25, at the National Press Club at 14th & F Streets NW in Washington, DC. The paper is a refutation of the Evangelical Climate Initiative’s “Climate Change: An Evangelical Call to Action,” released last February, and a call to climate policies that will better protect the world’s poor and promote their economic development.

What: News Conference

When: Tuesday, July 25, 10:00 a.m.

Where: National Press Club, 4th & F Streets NW, Washington, DC

Why: Interfaith Stewardship Alliance will present “A Call to Truth, Prudence and Protection of the Poor: An Evangelical Response to Global Warming”

ISA’s 24-page paper has been endorsed by 130 leaders, including 111 evangelical theologians, pastors, climate scientists, environmental and developmental economists, and others, plus non-evangelical experts on climate change. The paper presents scientific, economic, ethical, and theological evidence that mandatory carbon-emissions reductions to mitigate global warming would “not only fail to achieve that end but would also have the unintended consequence of serious harm to the world's poor, delaying for decades or generations their rise from poverty and its attendant high rates of disease and premature death, and robbing them of the very tools they need to protect themselves from catastrophes.” It argues that foreseeable warming will “probably be moderate, within the range of natural variation, and may on balance be more beneficial than harmful to humankind.”

July 25’s presenters will be:

• Dr. David R. Legates, climatologist and director of the Center for Climatic Studies at the University of Delaware; to be introduced by University of Alabama climatologist and “Call to Truth” co-author Dr. Roy Spencer

• Dr. Kenneth Chilton, Director of the Institute for the Study of Economics and the Environment, Lindenwood University, Missouri

• Rev. Dr. Jim Tonkowich, President, Institute on Religion and Democracy, Washington, D.C.

• Rev. Abdul Karim Sesay, Senior Pastor, Kings and Priests Court International Ministries, Silver Spring, Maryland

• Dr. E. Calvin Beisner, associate professor of social ethics at Knox Theological Seminary, national spokesman of the Interfaith Stewardship Alliance, and “Call to Truth” co-author

ISA is a coalition of religious leaders, clergy, theologians, scientists, academics, and other policy experts committed to bringing a proper and balanced Biblical view of stewardship to critical issues of environment and economic development. Through its “Cornwall Network” the coalition works with churches, educational institutions, and other entities worldwide to promote principles of the Cornwall Declaration on Environmental Stewardship. 1. Just what we need, a theological solution to a scientific problem.
Follow the money, see how many ties to the oil industry you can find.

5. Well, lets see their peer reviewed research
Oh I forgot, they don't think they need their work to be checked out by the scientific community. They are above that part, ordained by God.

The droughts caused by GW have already caused considerable damage to the poor in N. Africa.

6. Not to be confused with this group
http://www.interfaithalliance.org/site/apps/nl/content2.asp?c=8dJIIWMCE&b=137971&ct=2504827 The Interfaith Alliance has always been one of those few religious organizations that truly is compassionate and understands our place in the world but the holier than thou fundies shout so loud many people forget about this group. It strikes me as none to obvious how this conservative and new group has fashioned a name so very close to the true Interfaith Alliance group.

7. Isn't there an equivalent to the AMA or the Bar
where these people can be discredited? Where they can be banned forever from making ludicrous comments about something of which they have no real proof? I really wish there was some way we could all do something about it.

I have an idea, but someone who knows better would have to handle it. How about a class action suit against this group and all others like it, perhaps even against the evangelical movement itself for trying to interfere with our individual rights and for them trying to shove their unsolicited and completely STUPID and unhealthy shit down our throats? Is there a way to make these people PAY for forcing us to breathe dirtier air, inhaling toxins and pollutants, and deal with a disintegrating ozone layer? There must be SOME organization, some brave enough lawyers who would be willing to make a name for themselves in suing the RRR. Right now. Right before the election to make ALL fundies, all congress people who support and heed to their call look like interfering extremists who are undermining the entire planet with their brainwashed and poisonous ideas.

9. I can't stand it ... I can't stand it ....
For some reason, evangelicals have a problem with the whole "be good stewards of the earth" concept. First we Dr. Dobson, resident wingnut, complaining that focus on the environment will detract from IMPORTANT issues-- like gay marriage!!! :eyes:

Now when some evangelicals actually WANT to take some responsibility for all the damage we've done to the environment, we have this WONDERFUL crew ready to undermine them with more FABULOUS science by Christians (the kind that doesn't use pesky things like scientific method).

And since when DO evangelicals CARE about people and poverty? News to me. Their deal is converting the "unchurched."

You'd think if they were trying to do some convincing pseudoscience, they'd at least come up with some convincing pseudoscientists. But seriously, Lindenwood College? Is this really the best they can do? CEI in a clerical collar?

Pathetic and demonstrably fucking evil.

...from the above link...
In 1998, Exxon devised a plan to stall action on global warming. The plan was outlined in an internal memo (see the memo ). It promised, "Victory will be achieved when uncertainties in climate science become part of the conventional wisdom" for "average citizens" and "the media."
The company would recruit and train new scientists who lack a "history of visibility in the climate debate" and develop materials depicting supporters of action to cut greenhouse gas emissions as "out of touch with reality."

While there is no indication that ExxonMobil paid the climate skeptics directly and the scientists may have their own motivations for participating, the company poured millions of dollars into spreading its message worldwide. Here's where some of that money went.

Dr. Kenneth Chilton

http://www.exxonsecrets.org/html/personfactsheet.php?id=808

http://www.exxonsecrets.org/html/orgfactsheet.php?id=73

From the mid-90s through 2000, the Center published the works of several noted climate change skeptics in its Policy Study series (links: http://wc.wustl.edu/csab/GCC.htm). Since 2000 and the re-naming of the center, it no longer seems to place an emphasis on refuting climate change science.

...so Chilton no longer works there.

More from the Interfaith Stewardship Alliance (all are on their board):

major step was taken in the spring of 2000 when an interfaith coalition of Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, and other scholars put forward an ethical statement of belief called The Cornwall Declaration on Environmental Stewardship. This declaration has so far been signed by over 1,500 leading clergy, theologians, and other people of faith, and has come to be viewed as one of the most significant expressions of belief about religion and the environment in modern times.

Regarding Cornwall's contents, the declaration recognizes “the moral necessity of ecological stewardship has become increasingly clear,” and then seeks to clear up three common misunderstandings that can impede a sound environmental ethic.

First, the document notes that “many people mistakenly view humans as principally consumer and polluters rather than producers and stewards.” This is important because a right understanding allows “growing affluence, technological innovation, and the application of human and material capital” to improve the condition of all living things.

Second, Cornwall takes a critical look at the perception that “nature knows best,” or that “the earth, untouched by human hands is the ideal.” Here the writers point out that humanity alone is capable of developing resources and strategies that can “unlock the potential...for all the earth’s inhabitants,” and therefore embrace beneficial human management of the earth.

Third, the declaration points out that while “some environmental concerns are well founded and serious, others are without foundation or greatly exaggerated.” This is of particular concern in developing nations, where basic issues like inadequate sanitation, widespread use of primitive fuels like wood and dung, and primitive agricultural practices go largely unaddressed while more distant and theoretical issues receive the lion’s share of funding and attention.

19. Hopefully I'm quoting Racel Maddow right
It wasn't about this group, but it applies to them as well.

"ISA’s 24-page paper has been endorsed by 130 leaders"

Rachel's reply to these scientific groups: There are more scientists named STEVE that believe global warming is a real danger, than do not.

:loveya: Rachel :)
