$6 Million So. Calif. Anti-Terrorism Center
The Department of Homeland Security revealed today that it has invested six million dollars in a facility in Norwalk, near Los Angeles, staffed primarily by LAPD, LA County Sheriffs Department and FBI, but also housing Homeland Security, epidemiologists, and chemical weapons experts. The intent of the center is to improve anti-terrorism response in Southern California.
In related news, a number of anti-terrorism experts from previous Democratic and Republican administrations have suggested setting up a similar center in the Washington, D.C. area to address the root causes of terrorism. It has been suggested that this center be staffed by experts in different countries and cultures, with ongoing contacts with their opposite numbers overseas. It has been pointed out that such a center would be uniquely positioned to intervene in fast-moving crises such as the current one in Lebanon. A government-owned building in the Foggy Bottom area that has seen little use in the past six years has been located.
Experts have even suggested a name for the facility: "U.S. Department of State."
