Wife goes AWOL to be with her husband
http://www.fayettevillenc.com/article?id=238727

Melissa Domon missed her husband so much she went AWOL. snip

She has been told that she will face up to 45 days confinement on her
ship, the USS Tarawa, for going absent without leave.

But Domon said she believes the punishment is worth the crime.

She said she has been separated from her husband, Fort Bragg Pfc.
Jeremy Domon, for so long that the stress and frustration of not
seeing each other has begun to strain their marriage and her psyche. The
Domons are 20 years old.

Besides, she said, Army and Navy recruiters lied to them when they
decided in 2004 to escape Sacramento for the adventures offered by
the military
. Melissa enlisted in the Navy; Jeremy in the Army.

Melissa Domon said the recruiters promised that they would be
stationed as close together as possible. Co-location, they call it.

1. If my addled brain serves me well
"As close together as possible" meant spouses could serve on the same coast inconus or same type of duty and all this depended on their MOS's and the needs of the service. Being in two different services makes that a harder wish to accomplish. Its amazing how generation after generation sing the same song, "my recruiter told me."

3. Yeah, but these are just kids.
The recruiters probably told them whatever they wanted to hear so they'd sign up. And being young and naive, they believed them.

Anyone know what kind of bonus recruiting officers get for making a quota?

6. True
I was young and naive many years ago when I enlisted. I don't know if the recruiter lied to me or not but I got along fine and dandy for the next 24 years. He guaranteed me a Navy School and I got it with the incredibly reasonable caveat that I maintain a 75% gpa, if not I would be assigned as a general detail and end up God Knows where doing God Knows what. I was not married when I initially enlisted.

On your bonus question, the "bonus" they get is the opportunity to remain in their job. If they miss quota over a certain period of time they will lose their billet and most likely have their careers topped off. They do get special incentive pay. I never did recruiting duty, stayed as far away as possible.

4. AWOL? That's perfectly Okay. Our so-called Commander in Chief did it
and he is the role model.

7. I think every servicemember
who is charged with AWOL or desertion should call bush as a character witness. The embarrassment value would be worth it.

34 years ago this month he was suspended from flying status for failure to take a medical exam which included a routine urinalysis for drug detection.
