Say a prayer for those who are still homeless one year after Hurricane Katrina ripped their lives away. Light a candle for those whose lives were lost. Support an organization not in the spotlight with what little you can afford to help bring hope to those still devastated by this tragedy. This is what we must do to remember this day. This is not a time for any political party to be using the deaths and suffering of these American citizens for political gain, and I think to do so is a DISGRACE.
I have seen blogs where people are writing that we should vote for Democrats in November by using this tragedy (and of course they always include the link to give to their campaigns.) And one "Gore support" site that actually gave its sheep talking points about what to post on sites today regarding pumping up Al Gore "politically" regarding his mission of mercy last year because they are running a "draft" and want to bring in new members who they will ask to give them donations. Again, a DISGRACE. Mr. Gore did that because he is a humanitarian, not a political leech.
And in remembering the lack of action that day, it was a Democratic Governor and Mayor of New Orleans who also dropped the ball on their own people by succombing to FEMA pressure instead of GOVERNING, aside from the CRIMINAL negligence of Bush and FEMA that was ultimately allowed to stand that brings us to today and the memories that will never ever be wiped away.
Now this morning, that bastard Bush will sit and eat breakfast with Nagin, then have the GALL to walk into a church. The level of my outrage knows no end regarding this. This is just like 9.11 now. It will only be pulled out and dusted off once a year to play the same political games that never change. Bush stuffing his face in New Orleans and taking a phony photo op does NOTHING for the tens of thousands who still live in TRAILERS. I'm not one to use profanity, but I have to state that this is a fuc^^^^ embarrassment to the world. To see people in our own country which beats its chest bragging it is the richest in the world treated as if they live in a third world country defies humanity.
I am also fed up with politicians across the political spectrum and their BS powerplaying.
How much suffering is enough to them to secure votes? Today is not a POLITICAL day and it does not belong to politicians and their phoney crocodile tear photo ops and campaigning. It is a day of remembrance, reflection, and ANGER. Anger for another opportunity squandered in this country to open a dialogue about race, discrimination, and hate. A dialogue many of ALL politics are afraid to have because it would just hit a little too close to home. ANGER at once again watching as our representatives allow those who hijacked our government to get away with murder. It is another shameful legacy we leave our children. ANGER that after a year, so many still have nothing, and the area is STILL as vulnerable to being hit again as they were a year ago.
But oh yes, there is hope. Hope for the contractors that will and have gotten rich. Hope for the "politicians" who see votes and accolades for themselves. Well, I don't want their brand of hope. I want to see the people moved out MOVED BACK IN. I want to see their homes given back to them without a fight. I want to see the children down there have a normal life. I want to see the Federal military OUT of New Orleans. I want to see Lake Ponchitrain cleaned of the toxins that we were told would take a DECADE or more to remove. New Orleans where this disaster struck is a WAR ZONE with military police strolling the streets a year later and noone bats a damn eye! Why are the military police patrolling those streets a year later? To keep blacks from moving back in? And why aren't the levees up to speed after a year? How the hell long does it take?
I'm just sick at heart over all of this, and disappointed across the board at how such a horrible tragedy is only used as political fodder by both sides. So today, I won't be watching any coverage of the bogus displays by Democrats or Republicans who all of sudden feel the need to go down there. I won't be doing anything but remembering what they put those people through. FIVE DAYS without food and water. FIVE DAYS in the Superdome watching people die. So yes, you go step in a church and get your photo op Bush, but your soul was gone long ago when you sold it to the Devil.
My prayers today and everyday go out to all who still search for peace and a way to get their lives back, not to those who only use it as an excuse to "campaign." Shame on all who do so. And to the local, state, and ESPECIALLY CRIMINAL Federal government, the blood from this disaster is on your hands. NO AMOUNT OF MONEY WILL WASH IT AWAY A YEAR LATER. Once again, you failed your country.
Remember that today.http://www.nola.com/http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060829/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_19
