29. I don't have children either
I'm single and got one - my withholdings always exceeded my tax liability. They pretty much just took the $300 back the next year.

Gas has gone up from $1.00 to $1.50 a gallon since then. $300 doesn't go far.

7. Have you ever calculated how much that $300 check cost you in
increases in other taxes and fees????? Thousands maybe?

I never got a check - but I along with those that did got hit with those increases.

10. The thing that blew my mind is how many people fell for it
I still remember people saying "You won't bitch about him when you get your tax rebate". I would go on my rant about the idiot, but it fell flat. Many of those people now wish they would have listened to me.

30. I couldn't believe it either -
how many people fell for it. That check was a very transparent political ploy and nothing more.

I have a right-wing cousin that I traded e-mails with pre-election and had a heated discussion with over Christmas '04. I made the points of illegitimate war, global warming, workers rights, environmental protection, health care, etc. Her and her husband's comebacks were 1. "aren't you happy that he cut your taxes" My response - I didn't get tax relief (stupefied looks on their faces) Their point #2. Aren't you happy with the way he handled 911 - my response - "you mean holding a microphone and pledging to 'smoke 'em outta their holes'"? then no - he should have been an engaged president and noticed the PDB that was titled "Osama - determined to strike in the US". to that she muttered, "he's a good man"...

We have since agreed not to talk politics.

9. I was just talking about that Bull Shit check
I got 5 years ago - it pissed me off then, it pisses me off now. I actually knew at the time I got that check that balanced budgets, surpluses, paying down the deficit... were all historical concepts. Health care costs alone have so dwarfed that $300 that it is laughable that the Republicans can still campaign on that lower tax bull shit.

13. It's one car payment for a lot of people
Basically you got a car payment paid and then got screwed for 5 more years. It's strange what money would do to people. I knew people who voted for the asshole just for that $300.

23. It's also strange how people can categorize
their expenses in their mind. So I got a car payment's worth of "tax relief" 5 years ago. this year alone, my health care expenditures are $1,500 more than they would have been 5 years ago with the same medical care. Property taxes have increased because the schools are under funded and have to rely more on property tax. Government licensing fees have increased for everything. Because the schools are asking for more and more local property tax increases, the voters cut them off at a point then the schools make parents pay for all day kindergarten, $350 for participation fees in athletics, etc.

Dad & Step-mom, Brother and Sister-in-law cannot even afford health insurance any more. Step-dad can't retire b/c he and Mom cannot afford to pay for the health insurance.

Manufacturing companies are replaced with warehouses and super Wal-Marts.

Boyfriend's uncle and cousin both seriously injured in Coal Mine accidents b/c of the lack of oversight.

2 neighbors without health insurance - one is almost a half a mil in debt, the other is paying on it. Both got married recently for the health insurance that their significant other had access to.

Heating costs, tuition increases, air and water pollution, Idiots trying to pretend that Global Warming is a myth. Decimation of workers' rights, most pathetic and disgusting response ever to a natural disaster (Katrina) leaving our fellow Americans stranded, hoping for relief, a bottle of water, a sign of hope for days. Bombs dropped, innocents killed, our nation's sons and daughters being killed and injured all with the spin that Iraq had WMDs and was tied to 911.

But, Fuck yeah - I got that $300 mother f'in dollars 5 years ago.

25. Exactly!
That's what I tried to tell people back then.

My health care has gone to shit. 6 years ago it was pretty good, now I throw money at the hospital for breathing their air. On top of that my contribution has gone up considerably. I have lost so much money in the last 6 years. I, for one have gone from a decent living to one that I have to pinch every penny. And I know I am not alone.

28. oh I forgot about that too -
that's more of the BS - (man does that $300 check piss me off... it was the most obvious "bribe" in the history of politics. But people still freakin' bought into it. It seriously makes my jaw hit the floor - but then I was still pissed that * stole the freakin' election and knew he was looking to buy some public support)

Yeah - that $300 wasn't a freakin' "refund" it was an advance on the next year's refund if you got one.

26. Gas, health care, property tax, groceries, utilities
Economy so bad that I have rarely gotten raises in the last 6 years. The cost of living has brought many people down to a lower standard of living that they had before georgie and his cronies destroyed years of prosperity. The $300 was blown well within the first year because of how bad they screwed this country.

38. Yeah - I guess I would have preferred
40 acres to $ 300 too. Even out here in the desert 40 acres goes for quite a bit.

I agree the tax cuts were a mistake, or most of them anyway. I would rather have our economy here five years later without the tax cuts. I think we'd be in much better shape.

Anyway, there doesn't seem to be any understanding of what the tax cuts were on this thread so far. It seems most people think they were a one time check which is completely wrong.

I actually get quite a bit from the tax cuts each year, but your mileage may differ.

Biggest sham ever. As far as the other tax cuts, the fed gave you a dollar while the state and local governments came and got another 10. My property taxes doubled, yeah what a bargain.
