The Lost Executioner: A Journey to the Heart of the Killing Fields
Nic Dunlop

Journalist and author Nic Dunlop speaks at the Asia Society in San Francisco about his book "The Lost Executioner: A Story of the Khmer Rouge." A native of Ireland and a photographer by training, the author gives a detailed look at the Khmer Rouge, the Cambodian Communist regime responsible for more than two million deaths between 1975 and 1979. In his book, Mr. Dunlop hones in on Comrade Duch, head of the Khmer Rouge secret police and Pol Pot's chief executioner, who had been missing until 1999. Mr. Dunlop attempts to discover how a well-educated schoolteacher became commandant of a torture center and a participant in the deaths of an estimated 20,000 political prisoners. The presentation involves an open discussion preceded by a slide show chronicling Mr. Dunlop’s series of visits to Cambodia.

Nic Dunlop was born in Ireland and has contributed to numerous newspapers, periodicals, and magazines around the globe. He was the recipient of the 1999 Excellence in Journalism award from Johns Hopkins University.

He claims to have volunteered in public schools while he was researching his books. He said nothing of substance, had no theoretical underpinning for his claims. He was a salesman and the audience just sank to his level.

Peter Beinart is a journalist and editor-at-large for the New Republic. He also writes for the Washington Post and Time magazine and appears regularly on CNN. Mr. Beinart, a former Rhodes Scholar, is a graduate of Oxford and Yale universities.

He argues that conservatives have gained greatly from the media's weak coverage of the Republican administration. Mr. Boehlert looks at the way the media covered the investigation into Karl Rove's role in the Valerie Plame outing, Whitewater, the Terry Schiavo right to die case, and Al Gore's 2000 presidential bid. He also examines the Bush and Clinton administrations' manipulation of the press and suggests that liberals need to learn how to better articulate their message to the press. Strand Bookstore in New York City hosted this event.

Eric Boehlert is a journalist and a contributing editor at Rolling Stone. He writes extensively on media, politics, and pop culture. His writings appear in the Hufffington Post website and Salon.com.

Rory Stewart has written for the New York Times Magazine, Granta, and the London Review of Books. A former fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire by the British government for services in Iraq. He attended at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, where he studied history and philosophy.

Joining him in the discussion is Andy Rotherham, senior fellow at the Progressive Policy Institute and a former Special Assistant to President Clinton. Mr. Rotherham has authored numerous articles on education that have been published in the Washington Post , the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. The discussion explores the issue of school reform and how to create school systems that will foster excellence in teachers and students.

Frederick Hess is a resident scholar and director of Education Policy Studies at American Enterprise Institute. Mr. Hess specializes in researching educational issues and has authored many books on the topic including: "No Child Left Behind: A Primer," "Urban School Reform," and "A Qualified Teacher in Every Classroom?" Mr. Hess holds a M.Ed. in Teaching and Curriculum and a M.A. and Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University. Currently, Mr. Hess is currently a faculty associate of the Harvard University Program in Education Policy and Governance at Harvard University.

In an appearance at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Harvard Professor Harry Lewis talks about his book "Excellence Without a Soul." Mr. Lewis offers analysis of how America's universities are failing students, from grade inflation to their handling of date rape cases. As a former dean of Harvard College, he argues that America's universities should offer more than an academic education and they should teach students wisdom and hold the accountable for their actions. This event was hosted by the Center of the American West at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado.

Harry Lewis graduated from Harvard College in 1968 and spent two years as a commissioned officer of the US Public Health Service. Currently, he teaches computer science at Harvard University and is a former dean at Harvard College. Mr. Lewis is the author of five books and has written numerous articles on computer science. Stephen Kinzer, a longtime foreign correspondent for the New York Times, has been the Times bureau chief in Turkey, Germany, and Nicaragua. He is the author of several books, including "All the Shah’s Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror" and "Bitter Fruit: The Untold Story of the American Coup in Guatemala" (co-authored with Stephen Schlesinger).
