1. I'm glad to see that, buthow many papers does WY have?
Because of it'srelatively small population, I would have thought the would only have one, but the article says "one of". Is it possible that one of them is liberal or at least neutral?

7. there are at least two major papers
in Cheyenne, and in Casper (home of the University of Wyoming). My take was that the Cheyenne one had a managing editor who was a straight-shooter.

10. the university of wyoming is actually in laramie
though there is a community college and extension campus in casper. But Casper does have the other major paper in Wyoming, the Casper Star-Tribune. I wouldn't say it's liberal, though many of the conservatives in wyoming do :)

12. it's all relevant
what passes for liberal in wyoming is probably conservative most everywhere else, right?

thanks for correcting me on where U of W is. I should have fact-checked that.

19. the denver papers seem to have a bigger share

than any of the wyoming papers, save the CST. I don't know what the Post's numbers are in Wyoming, but most of my friends that went through UW were more likely to subscribe to the post or to RMN than to any wyoming paper. And in northern wyoming, the billings gazette is about as widespread as any of the local papers. (That's probably overstating the case a bit, but not much ...)

That aside, though, the article in the WTE sounds cool. Looking forward to the house delegation turning blue here in a couple of months :)

3. The article cites old stats. Wyoming today has 52% approval for bush, 45%
disapproval.

Bush has positive net approval in four states, Utah (21%), Idaho (15%), Wyoming (7%), and Oklahoma (4%).

For the nation it's (-22%)

5. Jabbs, your website doesn't provide a link to the newspaper...
Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 10:23 AM by hlthe2b
so you are citing your own website, citing an anecdote with no reference?

What newspaper? I don't doubt for a moment the surprise you have at hearing this (nor do I doubt that one of the more centrist newspapers, (such as that in Casper or Cheyenne) might have that on the front page, but I am concerned that you don't feel it required practice to provide more information...

8. I mention the newspaper in the JABBS article
Edited on Sun Sep-03-06 09:54 PM by JABBS
the newspaper, the wyoming eagle-tribune, is mentioned in the second paragraph of the JABBS article. unfortunately, the newspaper's website doesn't provide a link (one that I could find) to the specific story. sorry.

if you are at all familiar with JABBS, you know that I provide a heavy amount of links to provide attribution. In this specific case, the wyoming eagle-tribune website isn't very good for searches.

I can assure you, though, that I read the newspaper myself, as I was in Cheyenne with my family Friday and Saturday.

9. thank you, Jabbs...
Cheyenne is actualy a rare Dem-predominating city in WY, so that would make sense.

11. how so?
Walking around town, and the area, it hardly seemed like a progressive area. The Republican Party had a large office in the heart of the business district. Even at a "happening place" like Sanford's Grub & Pub, I didn't see any rebels. Just a bunch of clean-cut, football-loving burger eaters.

13. All is relative, of course. But Cheyenne is the capitol and
Edited on Mon Sep-04-06 08:53 AM by hlthe2b
state employees are more likely to be Dems... Sometimes you have to look under the surface... The motel and bar that has long been a favorite for State Legislators while in session and Cheyenne Frontiers Day (famous rodeo event) each year has long been owned/managed by a a gay resident--a not so well kept secret.

As, I say, it is relative. Drive south to Colorado and you see a gradient with Fort Collins having increasingly conservative trends, though less so than Cheyenne--but Boulder and Denver being extremely progressive Dem enclaves and then southern Denver suburbs to Colorado Springs reverting back to RW territory.

Cheyenne, Laramie and Jackson are the traditional "more liberal" bastions in Wyoming. Like Texas, though, a Wyoming Democrat elected to office would be a moderate to slightly RW-leaning Republican elsewhere.

17. Yes definitely to Jackson (Hole) skewing liberal....
Edited on Mon Sep-04-06 01:39 PM by hlthe2b
but even Casper isn't as overwhelmingly conservative as it once was. After Matthew Shepherd's death the stunts of the Fred Phelps crowd in picketing the funeral in Casper did not go over well with the locals. It might actually been a bit of a wakeup call on the social conservative front, anyway...

One thing about many of these smaller, less populated western states--their conservatism is really more libertarian than anything, I believe... Many have not appreciated the Bush* crowd's energy policies allowing for oil and natural gas exploration on formerly pristine public lands or grazing lands...

20. did anyone say you're stupid?
a) it's an AP analysis, not a locally written analysis

but skipping that oversight by you, the question was not whether wyoming papers are capable of being critical of Bush, but rather the placement of the story on the front page.

even the biggest cynic would gladly admit that wyoming papers are far less likely to make that editorial decision than, say, New York, Boston or Los Angeles papers, right?

or are you prepared to suggest that wyoming is as liberal as those cities?
