Off-duty cop shoots San Diego Charger.

A San Diego Charger was shot Sunday morning by an off duty police officer. It happened around 3:30 Sunday morning..when an off duty Coronado police officer started following a man who was driving erratically. Police say the driver is Chargers linebacker Steve Foley.
The officer identified himself several times as a police officer, but Foley would not pull over. Foley then drove to his own neighborhood in Poway where he got out of the car and his girlfriend got behind the wheel. Police say Foley came at the officer who fired a warning shot. The woman then drove the car at the officer. The officer fired into the car, then shot Foley. But police say Foley kept coming, and the off duty officer shot him several more times. Foley was taken to Sharp Hospital for surgery. The woman was taken into custody. No charges have been filed yet. Steve Foley was arrested back in April for battery on a police officer and public drunkeness.

11. For balance sake, the cop and his car were not marked and

who knows how he ID'd himself if he was in pursuit--he had no sirens or lights, I assume. Looks like the player was a drunk A-hole who did threaten the life/safety of the cop, but this is a dangerous situation for any cop to put himself into without back-up. His approach was definitely not recommended for the reasons contained in this story. Drunk people at 3:30am are dangerous and any cop knows it. If he had just called it in and had uniformed cops intervene, the shooting might have been avoided. Not saying the player didn't escalate the situation, just questioning the judgement to pursue alone in this situation.

I've heard supposed liberals say this stuff all my life about athletes in general and football players in particular. I read identical crap on DU when Pat Tillman was killed.

We don't know jack about this case because we weren't there and cops are as unreliable as anyone else.

I don't think I would willingly relent to some fool following me at 3:30 in the morning who "claimed" to be a cop.
If the guy was in his own neighborhood--why shoot him? Why not just wait for an on-duty cop?
As a celebrity, who is to say that he didn't believe that this just wasn't a crazed fan?
As far as we know, it was self defense when they saw the gun.

In the state of Michigan, the driver of a motor-vehicle has no obligation to stop for anyone unless the vehicle doing the stopping is clearly marked as being operated by a law enforcement agency. That being said, if some creep followed me home at 3:00AM then proceeded to brandish a firearm at my doorstep, I'd run his ass down as well. Hell, the officer was lucky he didn't get shot himself. I suspect this is the case of an off-duty Rambo attempting to make a stop where he had no business doing so. He should have contacted the appropriate, local, law enforcement agency and followed at a safe distance until a lawful traffic-stop was made. At that point he could have assisted the officer making the stop by providing his eyewitness testimony.

By the way, there really is no such thing as an "Off Duty" cop. Even if they are on their Regular Day Off, they can be charged with "Failure to take Police Action" if they ignore a crime.

I've been a Charger season-ticketholder for seven years now. I've talked with Steve Foley at the practices. Steve always had a reputation as a hardworker, a dedicated professional, a teacher, who was willing to patiently work with the newbies, and someone dedicated to working in the community.

Just shows you what getting tanked up will do to your life.

Sad.

Foley was contemplating retirement already - this is the end of his career, for sure.

But, our local newspaper, the San Diego Union Tribune, noted that he was arrested for being "drunk in public" in April, and the D.A. refused to pursue charges. Therefore, he had a warning, and he needed to seek treatment I'll bet, and he declined to take heed.
