Proof that eating nothing but sausages & waffles will KILL you.

George Johnson, considered California's oldest living person at 112 and the state's last surviving World War I veteran, had experts shaking their heads over his junk food diet.

"He had terrible bad habits. He had a diet largely of sausages and waffles," Dr. L. Stephen Coles, founder of the Gerontology Research Group at the University of California, Los Angeles, said Friday.

The 5-foot-7, 140-pound Johnson died of pneumonia Wednesday at his Richmond home in Northern California.

"A lot of people think or imagine that your good habits and bad habits contribute to your longevity," Coles said. "But we often find it is in the genes rather than lifestyle."
------------

Let's face it, you can take care of yourself and eat right and live a good life but sooner or later either sausages or a stingray will git ya.

At my age I will say I did laugh.

3. I'm helplessly reminded of Vonnegut
in a recent Rolling Stone....please don't make me dig it out, lol. He's in his seventies-eighties, I think? Told the interviewer he was going to sue the makers of Pall Mall cigs because they promised to kill him and they didn't. : )

4. An Old man asked about his longevity said,
I never smoked, never drank liquor, never chased women and went to bed at 8 every night.

My, my, just how old are you?

37.

7. His cigarettes did almost kill him - he caught his study on fire
and then almost killed himself when he tried to go back in to save his papers. He was seriously injured - smoke inhalation, I think.

I love Vonnegut. I love to hear him speak. And I love his books.

"If I had known I was gonna live this long I would have taken better care of myself."

6. George Burns always said he lived a long life because he smoked cigars
everyday.
To be honest...I believe him.
I'm not a smoker but my father is. He is a high strung type. If he didn't smoke, he'd have had a heart attack by the time he was 50.
People react differently to different things. The genes are a telling point.

9. He wasn't overweight, though.
In fact, I bet he'd always been a picky eater. I often hear about very old people eating nothing but bolonga sandwiches or martinis with olives.

There's a theory that says the less you eat, the longer you live.

11. genetics
My family experience indicates that genetics have a lot to do with longevity. Both my grandmother and her sister lived to be 92; Grandma died weighing maybe 50 lbs, and her sister, who had high blood pressure, heart problems, etc. was still her chubby self. (Poor Grandma had mental health issues that Mom refused to deal with, and would have put me in a psych ward to deal with.) Their father lived into his 90s as well. Grandpa lived to be 87, in spite of having prostate cancer.

Both my parents are still alive and active: Mom still down-hill skis, and my biological father rides around on his sailboat and Harley. I am not worrying about dying young...just am staying away from smoking, which killed my other grandmother (emphysema).

Oh, and I am rooting for the sausages, and staying away from stingrays.

12. Old people tend to eat food that's easy to chew and
digest. They don't need all the electrolytes in their diets that young people need. He probably ate what was right for him up to the end.

Many old people thrive on custard and jello for years.
