Crocodile hunter Steve Irwin has put the bite into plans to allow crocodile hunting safaris in the Northern Territory.

Documents obtained under the Freedom of Information laws by News Ltd newspapers show that in April last year, the government was strongly considering allowing the safaris if it was safe, sustainable and humane.

The documents indicated the federal government had even gone to the extent of drawing up legal documents to make the move official.

But in May last year, Mr Irwin wrote to Environment Minister Ian Campbell opposing the move, and in August took Senator Campbell on a personal tour of Cape York to see crocodiles in the wild.

By October, Senator Campbell had shelved plans to allow 25 of 600 problem crocs to be shot each year by wealthy tourists, News Ltd said.

Mr Irwin's intervention has angered many in the NT.

Territory Environment Minister Marion Scrymgour said the hunting safaris would have been a huge boost for Aboriginal communities and pastoralists.

"Aboriginal economic enterprises and pastoralists are being held to ransom by a Queensland theme park operator," she told the Australian.

Mr Irwin's Australia Zoo did not respond to requests for comment.

i'm basing this on the way Irwin usually spoke. i can easily imagine if he were to meet Bill Clinton he would say something similar.

it's just so full of exaggeration which is how he often spoke, but also one of the reasons people loved to watch him. i mean, even those supportive of John Howard would most likely not call him "the greatest leader in the world".

i haven't read any quotes from him concerning Bush and Kerry. it seems people use the JH quotes to claim he had an opinion on American Politics. personally, i don't think he was all that informed about politics outside of his own personal interest which was animals, conservation, etc.

and i was totally hooked on it, one of the best things i saw , especially around that time when the world was debating what to do in Iraq.

and this pretty much is in line with what i thought about Irwin and his political views. as you say, it's mostly apolitical. but he is a nice guy who probably gets along with everyone when it comes to the issues important to him. i doubt if he ever met Bush or any other politician he would discuss abortion, taxes , Iraq.

i also don't get the comparisons to him and Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Reagan etc. even assuming he had political views, that certainly wasn't what his public profile was based on . people knew him as the Croc Hunter, the animal lover etc. and those who mourn him do so because of that.

Hell, he was happy to go to the Bush BBQ because Shrub was a fan of him and honestly if you read the whole thing, it seems like he was mostly excited about the food at the BBQ. he was holding a croc and talking to the camera. As he's telling us about it, he casually reaches under her belly between her two back legs to keep her from squirming loose. Mid sentence, he interupts himself with "oh, she's a female!" and then goes on with what he was originally saying.
