In defense of so-called jackass Steve Irwin posts...

Seriously, folks.

I liked Steve a lot. I don't have kids but several of my friends do. Their kids loved that guy and his antics! He clearly loved the animals he worked with and, for the most part, respected them. Myself, I know little about the animals he would deal with. I knew they were mostly wild. I thought he walked the line a few times, but he seemed to know what he was doing so I just enjoyed his show when it was on and had faith in his experience and credentials that what he was up to was decent enough in those situations.

Nonetheless, he was a good guy! A great guy!

However, some of the others here on DU that are getting all bent out of shape about some of the silly comments and pictures floating around about it are starting to irritate me.

Look -- Steve knew just as well as everybody else that he was completely over-the-top and audacious! His character and on-screen persona absolutely made him the subject of much comedy and jokes. He knew it, he revelled in it, and I am completely certain he'd respect every bit of it.

In many ways, all of these crazy pictures and animations just show how much people actually loved the guy!

And FWIW, my bio friends and I have made TONS of morbid jokes about him today-- we even made a drink called "Irwin's End"-- when we toasted him...but I don't see how that makes him a tool...

We're not talking about a personna on t.v. anymore. We are now talking about a real flesh and blood human being with a tremendously good heart who was a decent human being with a wonderful family.

It is about a decent human being who strived to help the best he could in what he did and who is leaving behind a wonderful family who loved him dearly. THAT is what is important.
