Dear Diary
DEAR DIARY:
I run American Jewish World Service, an international relief and development organization that has been doing substantial work against the mass killings in Darfur.
One day in June, I was leaving my office on the way to an evening appointment and was simultaneously talking by cellphone to a trustee committee about the need to maintain and expand this work.
I grabbed a cab, gave the driver my destination and continued to talk and to answer questions about our proposed Darfur strategies, and about the importance of keeping this issue in the public eye.
When I arrived at my destination, I put the committee on hold, held out a $20 bill for the driver and told him what change I wanted back. Imagine my surprise when he did not take the bill but instead turned to face me and said, “No.” He then explained, “I am from Sudan; your ride is free!”
