DAMN IT, Stir Up a Firestorm Against ABC

There have been diaries on the upcoming Bush propaganda piece called The Path to 9/11 which will air on ABC in a little more than a week. But we need to revisit this issue. For a major American TV network to air this blatant piece of pro-Bush propaganda eight weeks before the midterm elections is an outrage, and we need to stop it. Read on, and see what I think we should do about it.

If you've forgotten what all the fuss is about, check out this piece from ThinkProgress here. Basically, the show blames everything related to 9/11 on--you guessed it--Bill Clinton! It ignores all of Clinton's efforts against terrorism in the 90s and makes Bush look like a concerned, involved, heroic figure. (I could scarcely write that last phrase without vomiting.) Yes, Mr. "All right, you've covered your ass" is being presented as the nation's savior, rescuing us from Clintonism. William Rivers Pitt has the real story here, and it's infuriating. Excerpts:


ABC intends to mark the occasion <9/11> in far more grand a fashion. Starting September 10th and ending September 11th, the network will show a miniseries titled "The Path to 9/11." According to reports from early screenings, the writer/producer of the miniseries, Cyrus Nowrasteh, has crafted a television polemic intended to blame the entire event on President Clinton.


Leaving aside the wretched truth that the far right is once again using September 11 to score political points, the facts regarding the still-lingering effort to blame the Clinton administration for the attacks must be brought to the fore. Nowrasteh, at several points in his miniseries, rolls out a number of oft-debunked allegations that Clinton allowed Osama bin Laden to remain alive and free before the attacks.

Roger Cressy, National Security Council senior director for counterterrorism in the period 1999-2001, responded to these allegations in an article for the Washington Times in 2003. "Mr. Clinton approved every request made of him by the CIA and the U.S. military involving using force against bin Laden and al-Qaeda," wrote Cressy. "As President Bush well knows, bin Laden was and remains very good at staying hidden. The current administration faces many of the same challenges. Confusing the American people with misinformation and distortions will not generate the support we need to come together as a nation and defeat our terrorist enemies."


This piece of disgusting Republican bullshit is already being promoted by Rush Limbaugh and the fanatic, right wing Swift Boat lunatics. We need to mobilize against this NOW--loudly and clearly. Our objective should be simple:

KILL THIS BROADCAST. FORCE ABC TO WITHDRAW IT.

Freepers have taken this over and made a mockery of it.

That appears why I have had people call the advertisers and threaten boycotts. Freepers cannot do anything about email to GOP contributor boycott campaigns. What will they do? Pretend they will boycott and email them? hehe.

Email Wendy's restaurants, an exclusive GOP contributor, a national ABC advertiser and potential advertiser for this propaganda piece at [e-mail] and tell them, unless ABC cancels this propaganda piece you will never buy Wendy's hamburgers again. Also demand they get the CEO to get the GOP to enact a TEN Dollar an hour minimum wage and a real prescription benefit under Medicare Part B covering 80 percent of medication, and repeal Medicare Part D.

If freepers want to send their infantile mail to the Wendy's corporation let them. They will make them look like the Hitler youth we call them.

I wrote to ABC a few days ago about this but I'd also like to write to the sponsors if I knew who they were.

I will watch ABC prime time for the rest of the week to compile a list of companies that advertise on national ABC prime time shows. Look here for the list of national ABC advertisers so far. Everyone on Air America should be urging their listeners to boycott this program and to send email to ABC.

Republicans got the Reagan's program stooped this way. They had a very organized effort and everyone from Sean Hannity to Rush Limbaugh urging their listeners to contact the network.

The backlash against ABC and the GOP will cause more harm than whatever gains they make from the film — which will be few politically because only the misinformed will believe the propaganda, and it's what they believe anyway.

I'm very disappointed to hear that ABC is running a propaganda movie for GOP, THE ROAD TO 9/11, shortly before the midterm elections. Most Americans have figured out that part of how we got into the Iraq War is because the mainstream media served more as a PR conduit for the White House than as fact checkers and investigative reporters.

This show could put the last nail in the coffin of your credibility, and lower you to the level of Fox News--only without the conviction to be openly partisan.

I can't make an informed decision about something if I don't know the whole goddamned story. I don't like this "jumping the gun" bullshit. I too think the media monopoly has to be busted up ala AT&T in the mid to late 70's. How do we go about making that happen? If we can't free the media to do its job, none of this other stuff will matter.
Given my love of the freedom of speech, I see some parallels between this situation and the situation 2 years ago with Roger Moore's work. If I recall, he was forced to release the movie earlier than his original plan because it would have been "too close" to an election. If that's correct, then the timing of this movie really stinks. I'll give ABC the middle finger for their timing, but I'll wait until actually seeing it before grading its content.
