Schwarzenegger to Veto Health Care Bill
SACRAMENTO (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Tuesday he will veto a universal health care bill that is headed for his desk, saying the measure would set up a ''vast new bureaucracy'' that would be too expensive.

The Republican governor said the single-payer system proposed by Sen. Sheila Kuehl would ''cost the state billions and lead to significant new taxes on individuals and businesses, without solving the critical issue of affordability. ''I won't jeopardize the economy of our state for such a purpose,'' the governor said in a statement.

Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, said Schwarzenegger's comments indicated he ''has not read the bill, doesn't understand the bill or is being completely misdirected by his handlers.'' ''Where there are no cost controls at all now, and enormous administrative overhead and profit for insurance companies, there would have been a transparent system that actually would succeed in making health care coverage affordable in California,'' she said in a statement issued Tuesday.

The bill would provide every California resident with health insurance through a system controlled by a new entity called the California Health Insurance Agency. The legislation also would establish a commission to recommend to the governor and Legislature how much to charge patients and businesses in premiums to help pay for the system. The bill was approved by lawmakers last week but has not reached Schwarzenegger yet, aides said Tuesday...

12. Let's hope so.
The Legislature was solidly in favor and just might have enough votes to override.

11. He better use SOMETHING against him
So far I'm not impressed with Angelides. His ads are the same dull pablum that Davis used and he isn't a real charismatic speaker. He looks like Munch on Law & Order (not a value judgment just a comment).

15. Angelides is 'neutral' on the bill
reading between the lines, that screams at me that he doesn't support it, yet he needs to walk through the political minefield. Asshole! Who the hell am I supposed to vote for in November?

9. Arnold would be called "liberal" by the repukes if he signed, but he
would get re-elected if he did. This way Angelides has a chance. Still, I'd rather see him sign this important bill.

10. Not unexpected.
I'm getting conflicting information on Angelides, though. My daughter is well connected with local party leadership and was told that Angelides said he'd have vetoed it, too; the article, however, says he'll work towards universal health care. I wonder where the truth lies.

I'm not nuts about Angelides, but I'll vote for him over Schwarzenegger any day -- despite Arnold's pretending to be a progressive in a couple of instances. I'd just keep after the Dems in the Legislature to keep Phil in line.

However, John Garamendi as Insurance Commissioner has made Universal Health Care a raison d'être and would remake the existing huge and wasteful Workers Compensation program to handle health care for all. Garamendi is running for Lt.Governor and most definitely has my vote!

There are so many urgent issues that need to be addressed, but health care is a very major one that must not be pushed aside.

18. I know.
That's why I mentioned it. It does not fit with the information I received through my daughter from her very solid connections.

17. Agree about Garamendi, he's one of the best state polls we have, imo.

16. BS.
''I won't jeopardize the economy of our state for such a purpose,'' the governor said in a statement.

For Health care?

This is a good bill, overall. And Kuehl is right, there's adequate cost controls in the bill. This is not only affordable for the state, it's insurance of a sort that we see less chronic illness down the road and less use of limited, expensive emergency rooms for primary care.

This is good government. Arnold, and his party, is way off base here.

19. Gee, Arnold, you didn't have to worry about your $100,000 surgery
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 09:02 PM by Joe Bacon
Arnold, when you had your heart surgery, you had no worries about paying for it. Yet, my family went bankrupt when my mother needed surgery that a bean counter vetoed.

F YOU ARNOLD!

20. Why do people keep thinking Arnold isn't owned?
He is here to serve his masters, and these are not the people of California. He was installed to cover up the rape of California by the power companies, the corruption of our electoral processes, and to suppress any innovations such as this health care bill. That's his job. He doesn't work for us.
