So...did we like Katie?
I watched Katie. I couldn't sit down for the entire thing, but I did see most of it.

In general, I liked the format. It was part news magazine, part straight news.

I wholeheartedly approved of the top story--about Afghanistan spiraling into chaos. Having a reporter on the scene, being led by the Taliban was decent journalism. I liked this story because it speaks truth. The fact that it undercuts what Junior says about Iraq being the front on terra---is an added bonus.

Her interview with Thomas Friedman was decent. She seems like she's playing it straight...asking questions and allowing the guests to give their viewpoint. Interesting that they give the top story (Afghanistan) and then segue to discussion on the topic. That will be a tightrope. Dems will not be happy with Rep opinions and vice versa.

In general, I liked Katie. I know that many don't like her. I thought she did an excellent job.

I liked the sensible appeal of "Supersize Me" guy in the "Free Speech" segment. His opinion was reasonable and truthful. What happens though...when Limbaugh is featured in this segment on Thursday? Will they give any yahoo air time?

I'm mixed about this. There were some things I liked. Others I didn't. The format is definitely a very different path that has been taken in network news.

Anyone else have thoughts?

9. You base your news approval on makeup application?
A great contribution to the discussion.

13. It's a criticism on how they are trying to market her.
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 09:20 PM by MookieWilson
She didn't look like that on the Today Show.

Why'd they feel they had to tart her up?

Along the same lines, why are the ball girls at the US Open in shrink wrap and the ball boys not?

6. I think it will turn into "Good Evening America" with lots of cutesy stuff
When she interviewed Friedman she acted like she was sooooo serious and soooo interested. I can't stand that tilting her head like she does. I have watched CBS evening news for over 30 years. I'll try ABC now, even though that head bobbing jerk Gibson is hard to take.

11. I thought it was a little too folksy.
Too dumbed-down for my taste. But she has that "morning show patter" working against her. It's no worse than the other crap news media we are force-fed. She's just not a serious journalist, IMHO. Which is in fact is a dying breed, so I am not faulting her. It's just what's become expected in this sound-bite world in which we live.

17. I thought she was good.
The Afghanistan story was good, not something the Bushies would be happy with, which I thought was a good thing for her to do right out of the gate, something the White House would prefer we not know. I thought the "Supersize Me" guy was great, too, and interesting that she had someone commenting critically like that right away.

18. I caught the rest of Lou Dobbs
and then the Newshour PBS, sorry CBS I am from the old school, when CBS had great reporters such Cronkite, Eric Severaid (spelled name wrong) Dan Rather, CBS was great at one time. That is when they had real journalists, to much fluff and not enough truth now.

Her being giddy about Rush limblob kinda turned me off. I hope she turns real liberal on their asses when she learns the truth.

22. NEVER watch the network news. Don't watch CNN or FAUX or MSNBC
Used to watch News Hour with Jim Lehrer--religiously--but quit about a year ago. Even he's moved too far to the right, and it all started when he hired Gwennie.

We read a local (Raleigh, NC) paper and the NYTimes. Get all the rest of my news from the internet.

Katie will not hook me, not even out of curiousity.

24. I never get home in time anyway, but even if I did
how could I take seriously a person who reports the news with her head perpetually tilted to one side like a cute little cheerleader?

She reminded me of the old joke about the easiest way to kill a blonde: "Put spikes in her shoulder pads."

Christianne Armanpour is the first to come to mind and would have had me glued to the CBS broadcast.

Couric is not even on the list IMO... Sorry. I see her and immediately picture her fawning idiocy over the Navy Seals a few years back (they "rock," you know...:eyes:)

30. 15Million dollars and she can't think of a tag line!! Pathetic!!
Ok - I had to watch it, even though I have boycotted the Today show since the 2000 debacle which showed that

Couric is just another Rovian tool as evidenced by her despicable treatment of Al Gore. The mere sight of her makes me want to vomit, but I decided to see who

they decided to replace Rather (a true newsman) with and boy is the country in for a TREAT!!! It's newslite mingled with

several thinly veiled attempts to "EDUCATE" the public on topics such as why our gas prices are too high. (Didn't

you know that drilling down 175 miles into the Gulf of Mexico to bring us our oil almost equals the price we're paying at the pump?)

I thought not... but hey if it's on the evening news then quit yer bitchin' and pay that $3.00 per gallon plus... and smile while your doin' it!!!

Then we had the fluff piece on the American boy who has championed the creation of murals of poor Nicaraguan orphans by students in the U.S. and how

it's "connecting" the two cultures... sweet story, but not for THE EVENING NEWS for Chrissake!!! This kind of pablum belongs on Oprah or The View....

BUT THE TOPPER WAS AT THE END OF THE "PROGRAM" WHEN KATIE looks into the camera and coyly states that she just hasn't thought of the proper sign off/tag line yet.

Jeez I'm thinking, they have given this chick a reported FIFTEEN MILLION dollars and she's had what, 4-5 months to think about it and she's stumped.

ALL I CAN SAY is HEAVEN HELP US... and THANK GOD FOR THE "INTERNETS"...

(BTW The Spurlock piece was interesting, but IMHO not true.. I believe the country is bitterly divided thanks to Repub tactics)
