6. Referring to the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island, NC -
- by the word "Croatoan"? The Lost Colony in NC was an earlier settlement that disappeared, thought merged with and/or taken by the Croatoan natives.

Jamestown in VA was the first permanent and successful settlement of English colonist in America.

3. Alan Alda's Scientific American Frontiers
did a good show on it and revealed some answers (extreme droughts played major role in Tragedy), but, like Redstone said, "Croatoan".

4. Been there numerous times over the past 30+ years -
- and it's a wonderful place. Very well done with recent (last 5 years or so) excavations which have revealed that the Jamestown fort was not washed away by the James river as I was taught in elementary school. Part of the "Colonial Triangle" of Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown, it is well worth the time and expense to make a trip there - especially if you have children that are studying Colonial American history. Next year marks Jamestown's 400th anniversary and there will be many special events to catch.

5. I don't think it is a mystery, just a stopover on the way to Bismarck
;)

I guess it could be a tourist trap along I-94 in North Dakota. ;) You have to see the giant buffalo in town.
