Lamont Wouldn't Back Lieberman For Defense

If Ned Lamont is elected to the U. S. Senate, he would probably not vote to confirm opponent Joe Lieberman as President Bush's Defense Secretary, Lamont said Wednesday.

Replacing Rumsfeld with Lieberman, Lamont said, would be "a lateral move."

Speaking to a group of national reporters and political analysts at a breakfast meeting, Lamont was asked whether he would back Lieberman. Lamont, the Democratic party Senate nominee, defeated Lieberman in last month's primary, but the incumbent is running for re-election as an independent.

He has been frequently mentioned as a possible replacement for the embattled Donald Rumsfeld, and Lieberman has repeatedly said he is not interested.
