The DNC asks you to weigh in on the "Path to 9/11" Debacle
Dear _______________,

Does a major national broadcast network want to stain itself by presenting an irresponsible, slanderous, fraudulent, "docu-drama" to the American public?

Not if you and I have the last word -- but either way, we're about to find out.

The ABC television network -- a cog in the Walt Disney empire -- unleashed a promotional blitz in the last week for a new "docudrama" called "The Path to 9/11". ABC has thrown its corporate might behind the two-night production, and bills it as a public service: a TV event, to quote the ABC tagline, "based on the 9/11 Commission Report".

That's false. "The Path to 9/11" is actually a bald-faced attempt to slander Democrats and revise history right before Americans vote in a major election.

The miniseries, which was put together by right-wing conservative writers, relies on the old GOP playbook of using terrorism to scare Americans. "The Path to 9/11" mocks the truth and dishonors the memory of 9/11 victims to serve a cheap, callous political agenda. It irresponsibly misrepresents the facts and completely distorts the truth.

ABC/Disney executives need to hear from the public and understand that their abuse of the public trust comes with a cost. Tell Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger to keep this right-wing propaganda off the air -- we'll deliver your message:

http://www.democrats.org/pathto911

This story is breaking quickly. The bias of the "docudrama" only became known when ABC began circulating previews recently. Less than two weeks ago, 9/11 Commission member Richard Ben-Veniste confronted a lead writer of "The Path to 9/11" after watching the first half of the miniseries at a screening, but most of what we know amounts to bits and pieces because ABC chose to screen the miniseries to conservative bloggers and right-wing media outlets exclusively. Almost none of the Democrats portrayed in the film have even been asked for their thoughts.

But we still know enough, thanks to news accounts and crack research, to fact check "The Path to 9/11" as a biased, irresponsible mess. Here's what you need to know:

Richard Clarke -- the counterterrorism czar for the Clinton administration, now himself a consultant to ABC News -- describes a key scene in "The Path to 9/11" as "180 degrees from what happened." In the scene, a CIA field agent places a phone call to get the go ahead to kill Osama Bin Laden, then in his sights, only to have a senior Clinton administration official refuse and hang up the phone. Sandy Berger, President Clinton's National Security Advisor, called the same scene "a total fabrication. It did not happen." And Roger Cressey, a top Bush and Clinton counterterrorism official, said it was "something straight out of Disney and fantasyland. It's factually wrong. And that's shameful."
Another scene revives the old right-wing myth that press reporting made it impossible to track Osama bin Laden, accusing the Washington Post of blowing the secret that American intelligence tracked his satellite phone calls. In reality, responsibility for that blunder -- contrary to "The Path to 9/11" -- rests with none other than the arch-conservative Washington Times.
The former National Security Council head of counterterrorism says that President Clinton "approved every request made of him by the CIA and the U.S. military involving using force against bin Laden and al-Qaeda," and the 9/11 report says the CIA had full authority from President Clinton to strike Bin Laden. Yet chief "Path to 9/11" scriptwriter Cyrus Nowrasteh, a friend of Rush Limbaugh, says the miniseries shows how President Clinton had "frequent opportunities in the '90s to stop Bin Laden in his tracks -- but lacked the will to do so."
ABC asked only the Republican co-chair of the 9/11 Commission, Tom Kean, Sr., to advise the makers of "The Path to 9/11". The producers optioned two books, one written by a Bush administration political appointee, as the basis of the screenplay -- yet bill the miniseries as "based on the 9/11 Commission Report."
This is a picture of bias -- a conservative attempt to rewrite the history of September 11 to blame Democrats, just in time for the election.

Tell Walt Disney president Robert Iger that you hold his company responsible -- and that this community demands that ABC tell the truth:

http://www.democrats.org/pathto911

ABC is trying to use of the airwaves -- airwaves owned by you and me, and loaned to broadcasters as a public trust -- to slander Democrats and sell a slanderous, irresponsible fraud to the American people, and they're shamefully doing it just weeks away from Election Day.

The Walt Disney Corporation could have given Americans an honest look at September 11. Instead, the company abandoned its duty to the truth -- and embraced the fiction known as "The Path to 9/11."

But ABC isn't the only company pushing this gross revision of history. ABC has enlisted the reputable education and children's entertainment company Scholastic, Inc. to send 100,000 letters to high school teachers, urging them to show students "The Path to 9/11". Scholastic has also created a discussion guide for teachers to use to encourage students and their families to watch this irresponsible fraud and then discuss it in school. The discussion guide does not in any way point out the concerns and criticisms that have been raised about the validity and accuracy of the film.

We've got to stop this now.

ABC/Disney must face an accountability moment. You can ratchet up the pressure on ABC by sending your own letter to Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger -- tell him to keep this propaganda off their air.

http://www.democrats.org/pathto911

We'll keep you up to date as this story evolves.

Thank you,
Tom

1. Done...
My comment to Mr. Iger:

"Dear Mr. Iger,

"President of Walt Disney" is far too modest a title for you. Might I suggest one more fitting of your present station: Minister of Propaganda.

Yes, Goebbels would be proud -- very proud, indeed."

If anyone here has any interest in reading just how these back stabbing, paranoid, power-grubbing reprehensible little men operate a business, do yourself a favor and read this revealing saga... : Disney War by James B. Stewart.

Several chapters are dedicated to Mr. Iger himself. :puke:

So it goes back to emailing Wendy's and Red Lobster and Rush's sponsors.

3. Done...! Here's my letter to them...
As of today we are boycotting ABC/Disney. We believe this is a big statement for us, as we in the past have been ardent fans of the resort, it's films, entertainment and products.

In 2004 the Disney corporation stated it was not partisan, and as such could not distribute or support Fahrenheit 9/11. Given that we don't like to think about politics when we go to Disneyland, we respected that decision.

Given that ABC is airing The Path to 9/11, with no commercial interruptions and advertising it as a docu-drama you seem to have changed your minds, and are in fact a partisan corporation.

In good conscience, we can no longer purchase Disney films or go to see them in theaters. We won't be purchasing anymore Baby Einstein for our niece, or our friend's children. We won't stay at the Disneyland resort, as we've done in the past for over night stays in the off season. Nor will we visit or shop at the parks as we do on a regular basis as passholders. We won't be renewing our passes with the resort, and will advise our friends to do the same. We will also be selling our tickets to see the Lion King show when it comes to Los Angeles in the fall of this year. You should also know that we will be cancelling our WDW vacation, as we choose not to fund your partisan acts or help to reimburse your company's cost for it's 30 million dollar film--Path to 9/11.

Thanks so much for helping to show me the hypocrites that the Disney company are, and saving me so much money this upcoming Christmas season.

about Disney and F 9/11

Disney Says No to "Fahrenheit 9/11"
Posted on May 5, 2004 11:29 PM under: World News & Politics

The Walt Disney Company has blocked distribution of Michael Moore's new film "Fahrenheit 9/11" simply because it is critical of the U.S. President George W. Bush.

The film -- which links Bush with powerful Saudi families, including that of Osama bin Laden -- is set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival in France later this month.

The reason?
According to today's edition of The New York Times, it might 'endanger' millions of dollars of tax breaks Disney receives from the state of Florida because the film will 'anger' the governor of Florida, Jeb Bush.

Richard Robinson
CEO
Scholastic Publications

Dear Mr. Robinson:

This is to notify you that unless Scholastic severs its relationship with the ABC mini-series, "The Path to 9/11", it is my intention to organize the XXXXXXX County PTA in a permanent boycott of Scholastic products. With 144,000 students, XXXXXX County, XXXXXXX is one of the largest school systems in the mid-Atlantic region.

According to the NYT, a number of highly-placed former officials within the Clinton Administration have found the mini-series to have serious factual errors. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/07/washington/07path.html?_r=1&oref=slogin The mini-series appears to be a partisan, inaccurate and libelous attack on Democrats.

As the Vice President of the PTA in a XXXXXX County school, I feel that I have an obligation to my child and to other students throughout the County and the State of XXXXXX to do what I can to prevent a politically-biased and inaccurate account of the 9/11 tragedy from reaching children.

Please also be aware that I am also active within the local Democratic Committee, XXXXXX County being a predominantly Democratic area, and intend to carry this message to others through the Party.

I strongly advise you to immediately announce a halt to distribution of the offending product.

Sincerely yours,

Is there any way to determine who the sponsors and advertisers are for this show before it airs? If so, flooding them with boycott threats may help. After all, it seems to work for the Religio-crazies who yell boycott at the drop of a hat and have companies backing dowwn.

Here's mine;

Why is ABC exploiting the collective grief of Americans over 9/11 this way? Does ABC think so little of its viewing public?

In case ABC has forgotten, we were all attacked on 9/11. How dare your network manipulate our sorrow with a deliberate, politically slanted portrayal of this fresh wound? What you are doing is cruel.

I am saddened the network that invented the made-for-television movie has fallen so far. I guess quality such as "Brian's Song", 'That Certain Summer" and "The Day After" is gone forever from your lineup. Now we must suffer through our personal agonies, remixed by corporate revisionists. Worst of all, we're told these farces are based on fact.

I won't miss you ABC. I won't miss you at all.

Don't you realize that 9/11 occurred in New York City, home to many people who supported Clinton and opposed Bush? To do a drama, not even a precise documentary, that apparently puts the blame on Clinton is like telling the people of New York City, mostly Democrats, that they helped cause that horrible tragedy. I can't believe a company that is famed for its sensitivity to children can be so insensitive. If you must run this program, then move it off of ABC. ABC doesn't deserve to be a vehicle for such trash.

I don't understand how so many can judge this docu-whatever-the-hell-it-is without having seen it. Worse than that, it makes no sense to be comparing people to Nazis over it.

35. I'm making my decision.........
on what people who HAVE viewed it think. If we allow it to air un-protested then it will be too late to do anything about it. One it's aired it becomes fact, just like the Bush Administration propaganda about the reasons for invading Iraq. Don't you find it odd that 40% of Americans STILL think Saddam and Iraq had something to do with 9/11? That's because the Bush Administration put the lie out there and NO ONE challenged it. The media went with it, never questioned it, and it became fact.
NOW is the time to put a stop to this propaganda, to put a halt to the revisionist tactics of the right wing.

I agree, the Nazi references go a bit to far, but the same thing could be said of Rummy's statements of last week. It goes both ways.

9/11. Such as causing links to sites like http://physics911.net to be posed around the net? The debate after it airs could be a good time to bring up more of the real facts behind 9/11.

63. Because people who were involved HAVE seen it
and debunked it. Letting it air to the masses who don't KNOW it's a piece of propaganda is unfair to them.

There are a lot of people who are not all that informed. They take what they see on television as fact, particularly if it is to be shown as a docu-drama without commercials.

It is political propaganda, and should not be shown on public airwaves.

28. Who is on Disney's Board?
Someone with a lot of money and evil intent is making this happen. This sounds like a Scaife project. The only reason for this intentionally dishonest and partisan assault on America is to continue the relentless whacko Republican fundamentalist control of information dissemination in this country. The more that the media is controlled, the less ability of law abiding people to prosecute those in charge for their flagrant crimes against America. Honestly, I thought I couldn't feel sorrier for those decent Republicans who are sickened and repulsed by what their Party is doing in their name. I guess the time of decent, civic minded, honest and patriotic Republicans has come to an end. If every registered Democrat and fair minded, decent person in this country doesn't vote in the upcoming primaries and election, who will be to blame if this country continues to be run by a group of people who care nothing about its' people?

This is such a gross violation of the public trust, such a pathetic blatant and corrupt attempt by Republicans to rewrite a painful truth for all Americans - that the administration in charge was not really in charge - and now they are using a national tragedy to maintain seats in Congress? Yes, I am that angry that Republicans in power have no decency or ethics. How many times does the perp of a crime have to be a self serving, corrupt, power hungry arsehole before we create the stereotype that ALL Republicans are alike?

I find it irresponsible that ABC would air a program that has known falsehoods. You can hide behind calling it docudrama all you like, but the fact is this, like your "news" is just schilling for this administration. Americans are a gullible lot and you count on this to confuse them with your propaganda. What is it? Trying to steer the American people who are fed up with the current direction of the Republicons to continue with that point of view? Is it that polls show that the American people are starting to realize that the official story left out a lot of details and new questions are arising and you want to do damage control? Show it and bye-bye ABC. You had better come up with a solution like CBS did with the Reagan miniseries and show it one one of your cable channels.

67. Here's mine
Here's some additional plotlines you might want to add. These are obviously fictional and conflated but might add some additional drama to the show. You could pretend that this President ignored multiple strong warnings from the previous administration about the seriousness of the terrorist threats facing the country. And then you could have them shelving a comprehensive plan to respond to the USS Cole bombing. For added measure you could have them blow off a comprehensive bipartisan report on beefing up Airport Security against terrorism. You could add dramatic tension by showing them ignoring specific warnings from the intelligence agencies of lets say 8 or 10 countries. To make a point about tragic mistakes and lapses in judgment you could have the President taking a month long vacation even while he gets a warning about Bin Laden, terrorists, airplanes and NYC.

OK, Maybe that's too big of a stretch. Maybe you could just have the Pentagon preparing for airliners hitting it months before the attack and still being totally impotent when it occurs. You could then have the President and all his advisers acting shocked by such an attack. How about showing a president simply sitting stunned and motionless in a meaningless photo opportunity while the attack is going on?

Obviously I am exaggerating here to make my point, but I have other ideas to dramatize such an important story. I had in mind writing a subplot about a fictional organization devoted to getting the US to invade Iraq if only a "Pearl Harbor" like attack would occur. Then you could have the members of this organization hired into the highest cabinet levels of the administration and coordinating the responses to planned terrorist attacks. What do you think? With some tweaking it might add some more tragedy and suspense to this film.

Its purpose is to fire up the base by attacking their favorite demon, Clinton's dick. Let's face it, they already know who will and who won't be tuning in. ABC has made a Faustian deal and will forever be subject to Ku Klux Karl's desires. If we ever questioned the leanings of the corporate media, that question has been answered loud and clear. Spread the word to all free thinking patriotic Americans that Disney is in league with a fascist takeover of our government. Picture this: Ku Klux Karl having sex with an over sized talking mouse.

Here is what I wrote:

ABC's decision to run a fictionalized partisan slander piece, misrepresented as a documentary-drama, about the events leading up to 9/11 infuriates me.

ABC has made a choice to side with the neo-con extreme right wing of this country and appeal to their dishonest whitewash of the Bush administration's responsibility for the events of 9/11 and instead, again, blame the Democrats and the Clinton administration with complete lies and events that never took place.

ABC's decision to exclusively preview the mini-series to proponents of conservative sites, media and bloggers further incriminates your company by obvious collusion with the exteme right wing of this country.

If ABC goes forward with plans to air this piece of propoganda, written by a right wing hack, I will gladly withdraw my support from all ABC network programs and affiliated companies, including Disney and it's many susbsidaries.

As the father of two young children, it will be difficult, but I will inform my children the ABC and Disney companies do not believe in telling the truth, and worse, are willing to act as the propoganda arm for a small virulent group of political goons who are attempting to re-write history and blame others for their mistakes.

Truth and responsibility are traits I would like to instill in my children and I cannot support a company that blatantly refuses to exhibit either.

101. The Chinese connection -- and how best to take action
(Please forgive my making a point here which I've made in another DU thread.)

How to take action? CalPERS is the largest stockholder in Disney; they engineered the removal of Michael Eisner. They have long been suspicious of Robert Iger and the way he has handled ABC.

Iger will not be much bothered by anything WE write. But if CalPERS starts asking why Disney made the decision to air a $30 million miniseries sans ads -- well, theirs is a voice that Iger MUST heed. SO we should write to CalPERS as well as to Disney.

Question: Why did Iger (I suspect that it was Iger personally) make this otherwise unfathomable business decision?

Disney desperately wants to expand into China, but the company is having problems with the Chinese government. The rulers of China have placed severe restrictions on the importation of animated films, which have a greater cross-cultural appeal than do live-action American films. The stated reason for the restrictions has something to do with "cultural contamination"; the real reason is protection of China's growing domestic animation industry.

Disney also hopes to build a theme park in China. Iger has spoken about this goal in public. Unfortunately, the governmental red tape presents a formidable obstacle.

Only the Bush administration can bring pressure on the notoriously difficult Chinese government. Disney needs Bush's help. Billions could be at stake.

This, I believe, is the real reason why Disney is going to such outlandish lengths to help the Republicans in the run-up to the election. The $30 million production cost of the miniseries may be small compared to the potential profits in China.

I'll be talking about all this on my blog, incidentally...

105. Done + my .02 to Disney
"The horror of 9/11 is not an appropriate topic for "dramatization", that term being a bad disclaimer that allows for blatant fabrications, twisting, and distortion of the facts to suit a particular bias. I strongly suggest that you pull this series and recreate it as necessary, so that it stands up as a factual documentary, and NOT someone's ideologically slanted vision of how they wish events had unfolded. Please stick to what's factually correct. Terrorist acts such as 9/11 should never be exploited and reconstucted as a political tool. If ABC airs this series in its present state, they'll go permanent channel block in our home. And we've advised them of that. At any rate, I hope those individuals who are slandered sue the hell out of the liars and enablers that concocted this propaganda piece."

109. Done, and ABC/Disney blocked
on our cable box. I told them I'd be boycotting anything and everything to do with Disney over this disgusting propaganda piece. As the parent of a 6-year old, I belong to one of their most valued marketing "focus groups". I hope thousands of parents like me write to Disney over this and scare the hell out of them.

This is just another example of corporate America trying desperately to influence public opinion in an election year. First oil companies, now Disney--who's next? I predict the pharmaceutical companies.

118. "Stain itself" ? ! It's been staining itself w. RW bias ...
>>>>Does a major national broadcast network want to stain itself by presenting an irresponsible, slanderous, fraudulent, "docu-drama" to the American publi>>>>

for *years*. Come on !

Slanted news, stacked panels: Will, Roberts, Stephanapolus. That's some balanced panel.

The DNC is commended for making an issue of this... finally. But they have been ignoring this trend for *years*. It goes WAY beyond one movie.

We are reaping the fruits of that now with the crossover of corporate propaganda from the "news" department to the 'entertainment' department.

Lesson: make an issue of RW msm bias all across the board, *all* of the time.

119. very sad . . .
Does Disney not think the "real" 9-11 story is interesting enough so they have to embellish? What's next, an embellished movie about Columbine? I remember a local minister/funeral home director went out to Columbine and claimed to have counseled victims familes and students. He went around our state and spoke at various high schools and apparently had a great time until it was discovered that he was also embellishing (AKA lying) about events that happened at the columbine shootings and there was no record of him ever having been to Columbine and counseling anyone. The families of the Columbine vicims wrote a letter to him and a couple of newspapers, asking him to stop telling these lies but he just kept going. He went off the deep end several months later and the funeral home he worked for let him go . . . He caused these families a lot of pain with his lies and I think the families of 9-11 should be just as mad over something that is "dramatized" as it makes the event seem less than important.

121. Done - and added the following comment
Make no mistake, ladies and gentlemen - this "docudrama" is a lie. It completely whitewashes the Republicans' failure to give President Clinton the tools he needed in order to fight terrorist organizations in the Middle East. And the current occupant of the White House has been a business partner of the bin Laden family for many years. Does that get mentioned in your presentation?

Tell the truth to your fellow Americans - or else we will strip you of the ability to use the airwaves as a bully pulpit.

123. 911 report for republicans:

I sent this: ( to http://www.democrats.org/pathto911)

"Since you folks cannot seem to comprehend the real 911 report, perhaps this comic book version would better suit your combined intellect?
"The 9/11 Report A graphic adaptation by Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colón"
http://www.slate.com/id/2147309/
It would seem that the two octogenarians responsible for this "comic" were able to be both accurate and non-political at the same time. They also pulled it off for about 39.99 million less dollars than you did."

Maybe if enough people see the comic version - which is reported to be quite accurate - then this muck-u-drama will self implode.

133. ABC NEWS - tarnished
This is what I sent (although I suspect it went to /dev/null):

For over 25 years that I can recall, ABC News represented quality reporting. This is highlighted when I consider that ABC chose to air Nightline during the Iran hostage crisis. I recall the visible frustration when Frank Reynolds tried to correct the facts after he misreported that Jim Brady had been killed. This is all in the past. With the airing of this propaganda, ABC tarnishes the reputation of countless who built your network. You have sunk to the lows previously only attainable by the likes of Pravda.
---

I cannot imagine that the people in ABC News are happy about this development...except for Cokie Roberts and George Will who must be in heaven.
