Her first night on CBS pulled record ratings. Even if you're just waiting for the eventual trainwreck, you're adding to the ratings in a small way.

Just drop Cutie the same way ABC dropped Emily's Reasons Why Not. Let her clang on the floor like a bad penny and just walk away. We have a nation to take back, you know...

3. Unless you're a Nielsen household, who would know what
you are watching? I don't like Couric either, but my watching or not watching wouldn't seem to make much difference.

8. I've Stated That A Million Times, Yet They Refuse To Listen LOL
They still think they can boycott shows or boycott networks and make an impact. They can't. Their boycotts are worthless, with the exception to the very few and insignificant number of DU'ers that may actually have the damn box.

But I'm happy to see someone else say it, but I bet tomorrow someone else will ask yet again to boycott some show. Sighhhhhh.

4. Wrong.
For the Gazillionth friggin time, unless you have a Nielsen Ratings Box you simply cease to exist to them.

10. I don't care if you have a Nielsen box or not
There are plenty of folks out there who will still huddle around the water cooler saying "Did you see Katie last night with the President?" or "What do you think of Katie calling free speech a privilege?" that will never participate in a Neilsen poll or any other TV poll.

That's the idea I'm trying to convey. Cutie wants attention. Don't give her any. Render her inert and irrelevant.

12. Excuse Me, But
"Her first night on CBS pulled record ratings. Even if you're just waiting for the eventual trainwreck, you're adding to the ratings in a small way"

Can't back away from your own statement now, sorry. That statement is wrong. That's what I responded to. I didn't respond to a statement that declared "If you watch Katie you might talk about it at the water cooler, and I don't want that".

Because it's technically unachievable!

25. Touche.
Under my scenario, people that the PTB want to be successful will have high ratings regardless of their actual viewership/listenership. They'll just punch in the numbers they want.

Under my scenario, they're just checking me out.

Under your scenario, things are as they seem.

20. Word up, and besides
I plan on watching her this week and judging for myself. Don't need people telling me what not to watch (especially when they have probably not watched it themselves).

If I tried really hard I could find reasons not to watch or listen to most anything.

And then there is DU too. Over yonder in the dungeon we have some (no mention of who...) who think the Naudet brothers' video was staged and that firefighters killed their own chaplin. So should I not read DU as it might make such a view more legitimate, or should I simply say I am an adult and can figure truth from fiction and facts from propoganda?

Some threads remind me of the RW telling us not to watch michael moore, etc and so on.

And I do plan on watching the abc show on 9/11. If I don't, I won't know what to bitch about :) and you can bet liberal bloggers WILL watch it and blog about the next day (while telling us we should not watch it...).

5. Adding to the ratings? You sure?
I thought only Nielsen households were added to the ratings.. someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyway, its never a bad thing to know what other Americans are watching and learning.

I'm more than a little uncomfortable about the sexism inherent in this argument. And before you protest, that "Cutie" crap is totally unnecessary.

18. Except that's the way she's allowed herself to be sold. "Perky"
hardly brings to mind a serious reporter.

Matt Lauer was sold as a sex object by NBC and is likewise fair game. He is an aging pretty boy, not a newscaster.

Both are entertainers fobbed off on the public as reporters.

I don't even have a TV. I'm just taking my lead from other DU'ers descriptions of her show.
Oh well. I stand by my uninformed posts!

23. I watched her, I'll watch her again, and I won't...
tell anyone else not to watch her.

OK, I didn't see tonight's show, but I did see last night's and while I don't give it aces for hard journalism, I never did give any of the network news aces-- it's just impossible to talk about everything in the whole world that's happening in less than 20 minutes. With all the tremendoos pressure Couric was under after all the hoopla, I think she did OK.

But, at least half of the first night viewers were likely news newbies who were just checking out what all the buzz was. Most won't come back simply because they don't watch news, but some will be hooked on her show. She's not Fox with an agenda, so if she gets more people to think about the news at all, that's a good thing.

I wish her well, so sue me.
