Disney/ABC AMITS THEIR 9/11 TALE IS FICTION
Disney/ABC admits 9/11 tale is fiction

ABC's disclaimer, which they say will run "throughout" their 9/11 movie ...

The following movie is a dramatization that is drawn from a variety of sources including the 9/11 Commission Report and other published materials, and from personal interviews. The movie is not a documentary. For dramatic and narrative purposes, the movie contains fictionalized scenes, composite and representative characters and dialogue, as well as time compression.

Network officials have sent a statement affiliates are supposed to read to viewers who write in or call to complain. And basically the statement is just a recitation of this disclaimer.

1. Now all they need to add is,
THIS IS PURE UNADULTERATED RIGHT WING PROPAGANDA, and we'll be there, at the truth that is.

2. Propaganda by any other name. Now if the 9/11 Commission would also
do the same about there report, we'd be getting somewhere!

3. That's great, but many people are still calling it a documentary.
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 10:00 AM by No Surrender
I just heard Frank Gaff(e)ney refer to it that way.

Edited to add - What about the bullshit they are distributing to our schools through Scholastic? Why are they distributing a warped fantasy to our schools? :argh:

ABC sucks, bigtime.

4. That's not good enough.
The "fictionalized scenes" change the entire story into one falsely indicting the Clinton administration.

The story itself and the opinion that it leaves viewers with is false.

Which can only lead to the next question, why is ABC choosing to tell this particular story?

5. "for dramatic and narrative purposes"
Why didn't they just put a Condi-Bush sex scene for those "purposes" then? Why just fabricate history?

7. The first sentence cancels out the fine print
Most viewers stop reading after the first sentence. ABC knows this. Karl Rove knows this.

8. I'm off to the principal's office this morning!
My 6th grader informed me last night that his history teacher is making the doc-u-flatchulance mandatory home work for his class. Here we are in the 2nd week of school and parents have to go on the offensive to smack down the wheels of propaganda already. I am very disturbed that a history teacher is going to use this piece of trash as fact in class...it's completely irresponcible of him!

I hope the teacher simply assumed that if Scholastic is behind it, it must be okay.

Otherwise, :grr:

9. Its Still Libel
Ascribing dialog or actions to real people, using their real names, when such actions or dialog is fictional is not covered under "Fair Comment & Criticism" and enjoys no protection under the First Amendment. Clinton, Albright, Clark, Berger et al would have a winnable case & cause of action against Disney/ABC (as they have already been advised that the material they are presenting is libel.)

10. In some ways...
...you guys are playing right into the hype machine about this movie. The more hype it generates, the more people who watch it, the more it costs to advertise. I've felt this movie was, at best, loosely based on fact as it is, and this pretty much confirms that.

Just like anything controversial, the bigger the hype, positive or negative, the happier ABC will be.

Remember the fervor that Da Vinci Code generated in the religious right? You can believe that Dan Brown and those who stood to profit from DVC loved every minute of it.

16. TV is full of such things
Lots of propaganda and outright lies on TV. Nor am I really saying you're doing something incorrect. Watch if you want. I doubt I will but that's just me. Just pointing out that the hype machine around this show is reaching critical mass quick, fast and in a hurry. More people tune in...more propaganda is spread, right?

As far as advertising goes, those dollars are not based around just this show. I have NO doubt that if ABC didn't see some form of profit in airing this show, that it wouldn't be aired. You can safely bet though, that a lot of people who make a lot of money sat around a really expensive table drinking really expensive water discussing how ABC would profit from showing this.

18. This fake documentary is a gift from ABC/Disney to Bush and the GOP
If we find out that they're profiting from "donations" from filthy rich GOP fascists then we're talking about bribery, not profit.

I have a lot of money. I will never go to Disneyland AGAIN. I will NEVER watch ABC again. There are a hell of a lot of people like me out there who now perceive ABC/Disney to be persona not grata. Got it?

11. If they fictionalize a few marginal scenes that do not lend directly to
the central idea of the story, then it is fine. This is what one expects from something like this. But when the fictional scenes are primary in telling the story then we have a problem.

20. I just can't accept that fact ABC wants it both ways.
They say it's fiction (at last), yet they don't use fictionalized names and characters and rather, choose to have historical figures whose deeds and words are on record. ABC risks defamation suits by former President Clinton and/or his staff IMO.
