Yes, negative association with a brand can hurt them in the short term, but they simply need to add a positive association to counter it. Either way, you are reinforcing the existance of the brand, which is the ultimate goal of the company. Whether you say "I love Wonder Bread," or "Wonder Bread tastes like shit," you have just solidified the brand "Wonder Bread" in the minds of your audience, and controlling perceived options is what the game is all about. Sure, you might think that Wonder Bread tastes like shit, but I may think you're full of shit, or you simply have different tastes than I do, or, in the case of the documentary and network station in question, I may believe the hate-radio pundits and think you're just being desperate and uppity, convincing me I should believe the damn thing because you hate it so much.

Don't ignore lies, but don't help the liars in exposing them.
