DISNEY HAS CAVED (to GOP). The threads w/that title are no joke.
Edited on Thu Sep-07-06 04:19 PM by Leopolds Ghost
Disney said they refused to politicise 9/11 so close to an election.

Two years later, they reversed their position in order to curry favor with the Bush clan and their wealthy executives.

This is the only thing Democrats should dwell on. Forget the other arguments, they are a distraction.

Of course, if this movie airs then you have MSM Disney balls to the wall. They will not be able to use the argument again, next time a political documentary (say, anti-Iraq war, or case for impeachment) wants to air on ABC in 2007/2008. So maybe we should think long-term here. After all, I wouldn't have supported censoring a left-wing documentary or killing that Reagan biopic for being insufficiently adulatory.

Pointing out the hypocrisy is the only argument we should make because it works both ways. If they go ahead and air the thing, as seems likely, we have them dead to rights in terms of precedent for the next anti-war or anti-bush movie to air on TV.

(And really, there have been precious few -- all the neoliberal baby boomers in hollywood are too busy exploiting the carcass of 9-11 in movies like Oliver Stone's pic to make authentic films that actually change peoples minds. Even Michael Moore's films disappoint me in that regard -- they do not change minds the way classic "political" films do.)

On Edit: These are the threads I'm referencing:

BREAKING - Disney caves in, will not air 9/11 movie

(this poster is referring to F9-11 in 2004)

DISNEY HAS NOT CAVED. (The thread with that title is a joke thread)

(this poster misses the importance of the 2004 precedent, IMO)

1. long-term: there is NO reciprocity
you will never see the films you mention shown. They always come up with one excuse or another.

Also, this is not about being 'pro' or 'con' anything. It's about misrepresenting the truth as a political ploy, IMO.

2. Culture of crony corruption
I was thinking we hadn't been paying enough attention to the cronyism the last few weeks - and it rears its ugly head again.

3. One question
what makes you think they won't use that argument again? (to keep a show with a from the left POV from being shown)

The only way ABC can be stopped is if other major news media start attacking. But since this is one of those 50/50 arguments it is unlikely any other major news media organizations want to stick their neck out.

4. That's known as a "double standard" -- people on top use it all the time.
Affluent whites versus poor blacks, Homeowners vs. renters, Big farmers vs. Family farmers, Ranchers vs. Indians, Big business vs. small business.

"I'm not saying that different standards apply to us. Everyone has equal opportunity to do X. But there are OTHER FACTORS YOU HAVE TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT."

The "other factors" line is always the tip-off that a double-standard is being used to create a stratified set of outcomes.

5. I got that...
Its just that I don't think it matters how good your argument is if it doesn't get covered in the news widely.

6. But don't forget.
As I was lectured in the 2nd thread. "It takes more intelligence to know when it is appropriate to post irony." :eyes: Yeah. Okay.

7. Soooo.....Disney will become fair because ......why?
So,we catch them being hypocrites. So? They don't care. They don't care that we caught them being Bush's Ballwashers, either. What they care about is converting or maintaining the people who really aren't paying attention (otherwise known as Bush's base.)

9. It's about framing the issue.
Kill the docudrama and you just make a martyr out of the neocons inside ABC headquarters, to be trotted around talk shows and receive standing ovations from their affluent, disaffected DLC journalist colleagues.

Fight the docudrama and let it survive in a wounded state and you actually have an albatross to hang around their neck when and if someone gets serious about investigating media consolidation and bias.

But you have to make the hypocrisy argument now.

Stop thinking short term. The precedent Disney set in 2004 is the only aspect of this issue that has any long-term validity as an argument. Delving into the details of the movie before or after it's released and nitpicking the lies just promotes it and gives them something to put on the box when it ends up in video stores. Killing it outright weakens your argument when you want to do something real about killing the corporate propaganda machine. Dems can hold hearings and ABC only has to point to how they caved on this one film, case closed, no result of hearings. Thats how Congress thinks.

It's the same reason I think Rumnsfeld should be the last man standing in the Bush Administration. You need an albatross to hang around their necks.
