"Huggable Jesus" dolls
From the only daily newspaper here in Brisbane:

"HUGGABLE Jesus is just one of the "dolls that love you back" being offered by a couple of biblical doll-makers in Boston who hawk plush dolls "that pack fun and faith into one lovable, kid-sized package".

The rest here:
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,20374929-5003402,00.html

Also in Huggable Moses and Huggable Esther !!!

An interesting way to teach your child about religion - nothing wrong with that. Of course, you just KNOW what some fundie parents will do with this.......

20. I don't know that I did you a favor.
Those are pretty ugly. I think the woman doll is okay, and has a pleasant smile, but the others are grotesque with those beards.

16. These look amazingly like bearded Cabbage Patch dolls--
except for the mom one. (I'm not sure if it is Eve, Sarah, Rachel or Mary). The beards are gross, but maybe if they need to expand to other markets they can make them into Islamic dolls.

27. It's Mary. I clicked another button.
She has a pleasant smile. The ones with beards are hideous, possibly frightening.

15. I rarely go to church anymore. I swear like an angry old man (but not
in front of the kiddies). But even I am not so greedy and poor of spirit that I'd try to make a buck off Jesus. :)

13. So Mary dressed Baby Jesus in a smock with a cross on it?
I mean, when I was a new mom, I never dressed my kids in something with an emblem of the future instrument of their death on it.

That pic is hysterical!

9. And as a plug for tolerance,
I found a link on popurls.com this morning to a Christian blog where people confess their sins and ask for prayers and support.

What struck me is that many of these people had come back to their religious roots out of sheer desperation. In many of the stories of people with sexual problems they had been abused as children.

So just consider that many of these people who believe things that we find ridiculous are actually suffering and are trying to do the best they can to get by.

My friend recently went through cocaine addicition after starting to do the blow at about age 33 and he is a member of AA now. I saw the church blog as providing a similar role for alot of these misfortunate people.

17. I'll tolerate ANY religion - it's a source of comfort and help to millions
It's the extremist fundamentalists of ANY religion who ruin it for the rest - gives the particular religious belief (and religion in general) a bad name.

Items like this merely play into the stereotype (think Ned Flanders from "The Simpsons") of whom these extremists are a part, and which is all too easily mocked. Unfortunately it's those extremist who seem to be doing the most damage in many places these days.

29. You can deride whoever you want
What if they were Islamic characters (well they are), would ridicule them?
What if they were Jewish characters (oh yeah, they are), would you ridicule them?
What about Native American dolls, ridiculous?

Now if they had bobble heads, well... heheh.

But a huggy patriarch is kind of cool. I'd love to have a huggy Bob Marley and a huggy Jerry Garcia myself!

30. Actually, IMHO that's closer to what Jesus ought to be about than what
the fundies usually peddle.

People who are busy hugging can't use their arms to kill other people.
