ABC Is Now Exposed for What They Are
Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 07:42 AM by Time for change
The veil is now gone. The pretense that ABC is a news organization is gone. The myth of the “liberal news media” is dead.

Our national corporate news media have been screwing the Democrats and our country for years. They receive free licenses from the federal government and in return they have the responsibility to provide news in “the public interest”. Yet they don’t care at all about that sacred responsibility. Instead, they use their privilege to provide slanted news that ensures that pro-corporate Republicans will stay in power and in return will enact legislation that ensures ever more accumulation of wealth and power to themselves. It now should be evident to all: ABC “News” is not a news organization. Rather, they are a propaganda machine that exists for the benefit of their parent corporation.

ABC’s so-called “docudrama” of the 9-11 attacks, which they intend to air this Sunday, should prove all of this once and for all. They are about to air a film that pretends to be informative and based on facts. Yet it should be abundantly clear by now that ABC’s only purpose in airing “The path to 9-11” is to influence this November’s elections in favor of the Republican Party. Over the past several years they have perpetrated one outrage after another (along with much of the rest of the corporate news media). This time they have hopefully gone too far and unmasked themselves. This should be the end of the great myth of the “liberal media”.

The film’s chief script writer, Cyrus Nowrasteh, is an ultra-conservative political hack and friend of Rush Limbaugh. The film was shown only to a conservative audience. The executive producer of the film is a member of the Bush administration’s PR team. ABC provided right wing bloggers with an advanced copy of the film, while excluding progressive bloggers from participating in a conference call about the film. And when faced with mounting criticism of the file, they yanked the official film blog in an effort to cut off further discussion. The film has been criticized by Richard Clarke, the man in charge of counter-terrorism during the time in question, as being inaccurate and biased. It has been disavowed by Richard Ben-Veniste of the 9-11 Commission. It has been criticized as inaccurate by members of the Clinton administration with first hand knowledge of the matter, and ex-President Clinton’s lawyer has written a letter to ABC that explains in detail how the film deviates from the truth as contained in the 9-11 Commission Report – and yet ABC continues to refuse to let anyone from the Clinton administration view the film. An FBI agent who consulted on the film resigned as a consultant because ABC refused to remove the inaccuracies. And the families of the 9-11 victims have criticized ABC for impairing the ability to compose an historically accurate accounting of the facts surrounding the 9-11 attacks because of their insistence on mixing revisionist history with entertainment.

Yet after all of this ABC remains obstinate. Their lame excuse for continuing to plan to air the film is that it is not a documentary, but a “dramatization”. Yet they still claim that it is based on the 9-11 Commission Report, which clearly is a lie, and they even bill it as a “public service.”

This is just the latest in a long line of abuses of their public trust

Consider how ABC’s daily political briefing, The Note, has handled a series of issues, as described by Eric Boehlert in “Lapdogs”:

They made a great big deal out of the trial of Senator Hillary Clinton’s former campaign finance director, David Rosen, for his handling of a fundraiser during Clinton’s 2000 campaign for the Senate, writing about it for 14 days in one month, including this entry: “The Justice Department case against David Rosen, national finance chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2000 Senate race, is getting stronger … which could be disastrous for the Senator’s ambitions.” Yet when Rosen was acquitted they didn’t find that news important enough to mention.

When the “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” (SBVFT) came out with their transparently phony allegations against John Kerry, right before the 2004 Presidential election, The Note posted nearly a hundred links to the story during one 17 day stretch. And when the New York Times published the results of an investigation which identified the Republican operatives behind the story, as well as many of the contradictions in the stories of SBVFT, The Note mocked the Times story as irrelevant.

But any news unfavorable to Republicans is either ignored or criticized by The Note. With regard to the Iraq war, they lost interest after things began turning sour, and they mocked the Downing Street Memo (“The left is unappeasable on the issue of the Downing Street Memo”) and Cindy Sheehan. They dismissed stories of Ken Starr’s conflict of interest during his investigation of Bill Clinton. They ignored the Jeff Gannon story and the news of Karl Rove’s role in the CIA leak investigation. They put positive spin on Bush’s handling of the Katrina disaster. And as the story of Tom DeLay’s corrupt activities began to emerge, The Note had this to say:

There is an iron triangle of liberal interest groups, Democratic congressional staffers, and media jackals… who have never identified with or liked Tom DeLay (and what he stands for) and are enjoying every minute of their conspiring to bring him down. Almost every accusation swirling around DeLay involves actions by him that have exact analogues among other members of Congress of both parties.

The list goes on and on. The main difference between ABC and FOX News would appear to be that ABC does a better job of pretending to be a real news organization, rather than a propaganda machine for the Republican Party.

What now?

I am so happy to see the Democrats responding aggressively to the outrage that ABC intends to start propagating on Monday. After years of being subjected to all means of abuse by the corporate news media, this may be the closest thing to open warfare between them and the Democratic Party that has yet occurred.

I believe that that is a good thing. The Democrats have undergone the torture of a thousand cuts by the corporate media over the last several years. They are in a terrible dilemma because, given the great power of our corporate news media, attacking them poses great risks.

Yet, Democrats may have no reasonable alternative choice other than to come out swinging against the corporate media. If not for consistently biased news coverage the Democrats would now control both Houses of Congress and the Presidency, and be represented by a much more progressive U.S. Supreme Court (by at least two seats) than we now have. The Democrats are the Party of the people, and the Republicans are the Party of the corporations, the wealthy and the powerful. A great deal of their power rests with the slanted news of the corporate news media, without which they would either have to begin to adopt a pro-people agenda or they could not win another election.

It may be that Democrats now have an opportunity to go over the heads of those who provide biased news to our country, directly to the people, to expose our corporate media for what they are. I pray that they can do that.

16. What a fricking lame and hypocritical response
They accuse those who criticize the film as being irresponsible because they don't have all the details, and yet they won't allow anyone but Republican hacks to view the film.

Then the fricking idiots claim that there is no political message in the film, and yet they refuse to condascend to offer any explanation for or defense of the multiple inaccuracies in the film.

What a bunch of jerks!

22. Can't access the headline on the article, but here is Google info:
Hope someone got a screen shot of the headline above the article. ABC is now acting as if they have nothing to lose by revealing their right wing control.

What we are witnessing is the bloody implosion of the "liberal media" myth, that has been forced down the American public's throat by the GOP for the past 30+ years. Puncturing this putrid abscess will be painful, but it is the only way to combat it.

corporate media.

The corpmedia acts as BushInc's front line for offense and defense. We can NEVER expose BushInc without taking down some of their many vicious defenders FIRST.

Fer chrissakes, all we want is a level playing field in the media.

17. Hmmm...why are the "coming out" now?
True. Disney and ABC are dropping any pretense of being a traditional, respectable news organization. They are, in a sense anyway, "crossing the Rubicon" and it is a risky, risky move for them...one made out of desperation I beleive.

The stakes must be enormous and I'll speculate that reasoning in the corporate towers goes something like this:'

If we lose the elections we lose congress
If we lose congress we lose Bush
If we lose Bush we lose our "deregulation"
If we lose Bush we lose our tax breaks

If the Dems win we're done.

We must expose ourselves and re-elect Republicans AT ALL COSTS....IT'S DO OR DIE.

Thoughts?

Good to see that someone else is thinking along the same lines.

In one sense it would be good to know that that is true. If they are feeling desperate, that may portend good things for us in the near future.

But on the other hand, if they are feeling desperate (which I believe they are), the scary question in my mind is "How far are they willing to go". They are very powerful, ruthless, and apparently without any morals to speak of. :scared:

26. I think you largely answered your own question in post # 17
But after thinking about it some more, I think that there may be even more at stake than that. Maybe in addition to losing their deregulation and their tax breaks, perhaps they stand to lose their broadcasting license as well? Why not? What have they done to deserve it? I broadcasting license is a prvilege and a public trust, that is supposed to carry with it sacred responsibilities to the citizens of this country. They have abused the hell out of that trust.

30. To call this speculation is to damn it with faint praise.
It's ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. THEIRS, and their wish to keep it.

They're scared that if the republi-CONS aren't in control, their free path to the pig trough will be obstructed. Especially since all those prominent Democratic senators wrote that letter - reminding Disney/ABC that it holds its broadcast licenses IN THE PUBLIC TRUST. That had to be a HUGE red flag when Robert Iger saw that in their letter.

18. Disney Board is interlocked w/Halliburton & Boeing & Edison Electr.
Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 09:11 AM by leveymg
So, why should anyone be surprised that ABC is going to run GOP propaganda? After all, the Bush Administration and the Republican Party are also wholely-owned by the same companies.

Let's take a look at the corporate profile of the four, major broadcast TeeVee networks in America.

ABC

ABC is a wholy-owned subsidiary of Disney Corporation. Here's the corporate biography of the Disney Board. http://corporate.disney.go.com/corporate/board_of_directors.html

These guys aren't cartoon animators. The Board Members also run Defense contractors, energy companies, along with the usual consumer goods makers and big banks.

CBS

Then, there's Viacom which spun off CBS late last year into a second subsidiary owned by 81-year old Sumner Redstone and his family. While in the past, Redstone describes himself as a "liberal Democrat", that may not be the case. In 2005, the Center for Public Integrity observed: http://www.publicintegrity.org/telecom/report.aspx?aid=407

Sumner Redstone tacitly endorsed George Bush for re-election in late September, at a meeting of CEOs in Hong Kong. The election of a Republican administration, Redstone told his audience, "is a better deal" in Viacom's view, "because the Republican administration has stood for many things we believe in, deregulation and so on."

Newsweek reported that Redstone's remarks were viewed by many as a breach of an understood code of silence regarding political endorsements that most media conglomerates respect. Several other executives from the top broadcasters were asked to comment, and most repudiated any notion of political favor, while a public interest lobbyist pointed to the remarks as evidence of "what we have known all along"—a comfortable relationship between the industry and its government regulators.

When asked to comment on Redstone's endorsement of Bush, a News Corp. spokesman told Newsweek, "We run these businesses not to promote an ideology or political agenda, but to make them successful."

NBC

NBC has long been a subsidiary of General Electric Corp., GE, which is a one of the world's largest conglomerates. It is also a major financial institution, and defense contractor. The Board is interlocked with an equally wide swath of global corporate interests, including Bechtel.

FOX

You've heard of Rupert Murdoch. Haven't you?

28. Interesting information about Redstone
I don't think that many people were surprised that to see ABC doing Republican propaganda.

But the naked transparency of it is surprising I think. At least until now they had pretended to be a real news organization.

Could it be that they thought that they wouldn't be called on this? I don't think so. Maybe though they are surprised by the vehemence of the response, though I see know reason why they should be surprised.

Or, maybe they are simply desperate now, that they see a real good chance that the House and Senate will slip away this fall.

19. Thank you.
I'm more angry and upset about this ABC/Disney scandal than anything else I've witnessed over the past 6 years. I've suspected for awhile now that they had connections to the GOP. But this is so shameless, so transparent, so unAmerican, so...so.... I don't even know what to call it. What has happened to my country?! I'm so angry about it I have found myself largly unable to participate in the discussion threads because I get so enraged I can't see straight.

I can't remember whose diary it was on another site but whoever wrote it said that researching the details behind this scandal is like "peeling an onion". How true. And each layer underneath that's uncovered gets more and more repulsive. Such as Exxon Mobil has ties to Scholastic?!!!

Anyway, I'm thankful and relieved that others here can keep their heads about them and provide us with information and facts about this, even though it becomes increasingly more difficult to bare.

25. Plus, PT9/11 was funded by an Evangelical Christian Film Institute
trying "to transform Hollywood" from the inside.

See:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2073411&mesg_id=2073411

and

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2080965

Furthermore, consider that in the summer of 2004, Disney (ABC & ESPN) prohibited the distrubution Fahrenheit 9/11 because it "politicized 9/11" in an election year. In contrast, Disney has decided to broadcast the radical evangelical group funded The Path To 9/11 without commercials on network TV on the (day before and) fifth anniversary of 9/11 this year, much closer to an election than when they forbid distribution of a $120 million grossing domestic motion picture release just two years earlier.

Gentlepeople,

PLEASE do the right thing. Not the "right" thing (as in pandering to the so-called "right" wing of American politics. PLEASE don't slander or libel the Clinton administration! "The Path to 9/11" is filled with lies, distortions, misrepresentations, and deceptions. PLEASE don't put it on the air! I don't want to feel compelled to stop watching ABC, or joining the growing boycott of ABC sponsors. But if this despicable miscarriage of truth and justice is allowed to air, I'm going to have to do both those things.

PLEASE pull this awful program!!!

Thank you.

41. The Rush Limbaugh/ABC/Disney connection is clearer than ever.
Now when we hear the name Rush Limbaugh, we'll be more likely to think of Disney, since they broadcast his radio show and made a "docudrama" written by a friend of his.

It's no fun arguing with him anymore. Even he can't keep up the sustained bullshit it takes to defend anything to do with bush and co. And he's an great bullshitter.

45. It important to note Disney spent $40 Million on this and ABC is

broadcasting it commercial free.

Meanwhile after trying to halt the 911
inquiry, then stalling it for a year,
Bush capped the budget for the 911
hearings at $25 Million, after appointing
the commissioners himself and enforcing
a deadline for the investigation.

$40 Million dollars to produce doc by Disney
(owned by Proctor and Gamble), a conservative
$20 million in forgone revenue by ABC against
a paltry $25 Million on an investigation which
was directed not to attach blame by any government
body for 911 'failures'

More than twice as much corporate money was spent
on this crockumentary by two of the largest US
corporations than the government spent on investigating
911.

That ought to be mentioned prominently during this years Congressional campaigns.

Bush and his Republican allies in Congress let our corporate news people have whatever they want: Massive tax breaks, consolidation, deregulation of every aspect of the public responsibility that they are supposed to show in order to maintain their broadcasting licenses. And in return, they do whatever they can to keep the theives in power. It's a great deal for everyone.

I read Lapdogs and about The Note. so, I am not surprised ABC is involved. I even posted somewhere about that connection. I do think this is an effort by the pig, Rove, in his Ends Justify the Means mentality.
I think this movie is obviously got his hand in it.

There's also WABC radio in New York, probably the biggest conservative talk radio platform in the country, giving Limbaugh and Hannity a big part of their reach and influence. (But they wouldn't distribute Fahrenheit 9/11 because it was too politically charged.)

59. The long and winding Path to 9/11
Well, could not we go further back in our time machine and ask:
What the hell did George Bush I do to stop Osama? I mean why not do that? He had the whole middle east in his grubby little hands back in 1991, so why not take Osama out right then either?

Now HERE is a concept for y'all,

It has struck me that this "non-issue" (really if you think about all the treason this admin is doing, this is a non-issue) is REALLY the DLC re-asserting itself as the controller of ALL things Democrat.
I mean it is all a Clinton (+administration) face saving thing that now supposedly ALL god Dems come to the aid of their "fearless leader." Well, it really is sapping our "momentum" on other more important issues, and the corporate controlled DLC KNOWS THAT.

So, I have stayed outside the blogosphere on this one, except for the few phone calls to ABC radio to gnash my teeth on the air, with the likes of Levin (the Zionist) and the new idiot (Jerry) last night taking over Laura Ingram's 8-10 slot in the NY ABC market.

Screw Disney and ABC, they were the next to fall to the nazis after Fox anyway, everyone knew that. I believe that ABC is also stirring the pot to get all good Dems back into the DLC fold, as Hilary was starting to get REALLY antsy at the calls to debate Tasini and with Lamont, and the Screw the DLC push happening as of late, I feel this is the motive for the over-hype of this non-issue.

This all just another Corporate-control of our sense of "what is important."

63. The most important issue is not how far back one goes in time
Rather, the most important issue in assessing the worthiness of the film (since ABC is billing it as a "public service") is its accuracy. This film is grossly inaccurate and therefore has no business being presented by a so-called "news" organization with a federal license to broadcast the news as a "docudrama" or anything of the sort. It is a work of fiction, pure and simple.

And I do believe that it is important for Democrats to spend time in combatting it. Terrorism is the one subject that Americans in general believe the Republicans do a better job at than Democrats. Just bringing up the issue can cause people to switch their vote to a Republican. With the presentation of a film that is supposedly based on facts, but which in fact is a bunch of lies used to make Democrats look weak on terrorism, if Democrats leave this alone it could have a disastrous effect on their chances to take back the House and the Senate this fall. It plays right into to old sterotypes about Democrats being weak on defense, and it is bound to change lots of votes if Democrats don't go into the attack mode.

The fact that Clinton is a DLC Democrat is a secondary issue, and by comparison unimportant with regard to this film IMO. By addressing this issue in a forthright manner Democrats can make a potentially disastrous situation into a positive, by exposing the hypocrisy of ABC.

90. I feel much as you do about those things
Yet, what it boils down to is the fact that a sizable minority of the American public -- that minority that makes all the difference in elections -- is simply gullible and will believe what they are told by our corporate media.

in other words, if the numerous crimes of the Bush administration go unmentioned or undiscussed by our corporate media, that sizable minority will believe that there are no crimes.

But they are not evil, and they WILL respond if the information is provided to them. If our corporate media provided real news -- if they really covered the numerous crimes of the Bush administration -- Bush could never have been elected in 2004, and his supporters in Congress would be thrown out of office by the dozens come this November.

Fahrenheit 911 was a documentary, and Path to 9-11 is fiction.

And if the Democratic Party reacts strongly enough to this, which they appear to be doing, maybe ABC won't get away with it. I think they're running scared.

F911 was a documentary and Pto911 fiction?

If that's the only difference, Democrats can't really criticize a work of fiction, it would be censorship.

My point was, the media mobsters are being hypocritical in its behavior toward both works and the Reagan series.

65. ABC persecuted Clinton throughout the 90s
ABC broadcast every lie they could get away with about Bill Clinton and never once questioned Clinton's accusers when accusation after accusation was shown to be false. During the 90s, ABC had propagandist Brit Hume covering the White House. They had Ken Starr's favorite media whore Jackie Judd reporting every lie Starr put out, even special ones Starr saved just for her. Judd was assisted by producer Chris Vlasto, who went out of his way to exercize his anti-Clinton bias. Vlasto even called up journalist Joe Conason with complaints after Conason co-wrote an article accusing Ken Starr of a conflict of interest.

http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/2004/11/23/jennings_clinton/index.html

From a 2004 Peter Jennings interview of Clinton:

JENNINGS Oh, yes, you do, sir. Oh -- excuse me, Mr. President, I can feel it across the room. You feel it very deeply.

CLINTON: No, I care. You don't want to go here, Peter. You don't want to go here. Not after what you people did and the way you, your network, what you did with Kenneth Starr. The way your people repeated every, little sleazy thing he leaked. No one has any idea what that's like. That's where I failed. You wanna know where I failed? I really let it -- it hurt me. I thought I lived in a country where people believed in the Constitution, the rule of law, freedom of speech. You never had to live in a time when people you knew and cared about were being indicted, carted off to jail, bankrupted, ruined, because they were Democrats and because they would not lie. So, I think we showed a lot of moral fiber to stand up to that, to stand up to these constant investigations, to this constant bodyguard of lies, this avalanche that was thrown at all of us.

Twenty years ago (well, 19 actually), ABC had this great network & corporate satire called "Max Headroom". It was my favorite show at the time. But the support from the network was just never there. I suspect that it was cancelled because of what it had to say. So I've known about ABC's hatred of the truth for a long time. Of course they are not the only network that hates the truth, but I thought I would just use this example anyway.

77. Yes...but!
I've known the networks were greedy corporate whores ever since the Kerry campaign. I should have known it sooner, but wasn't really paying attention. That the networks-not just ABC and Faux, but CBS and NBC, have abused the public airwaves to solely benefit themselves and their cronies is something the public needs to know and understand asap!

However, I don't think the dems in charge are the ones who will inform the public or who will change things, I really don't. Sure, it's what they "should" do, but frankly, far too many dems have proven themselves to be greedy whores themselves.

It's really up to all of US.

If we want to see this situation change the only answer is to BOYCOTT each and every advertiser the network vampires are feeding off of! Cut the bastards off where it really hurts em-financially. Then, we will see change. Otherwise, I wouldn't expect anything changing soon or if ever.
