2006 Opium production in Afghanistan has increased by 50 percent from 2005. Senator Schumer (D. NY) introduced a bill that would dedicate 700 Million dollars towards the a Afghan poppy eradication project.
Ted (I never met a bridge to nowhere I didn’t like) Stevens, (R. AK), attempted to get it killed by asking for a vote to “lay it on the table.” 44 Republicans and 1 Democrat voted in favor of killing the bill. A voice vote was then called, and the Schumer amendment passed. The voice vote was allowed by the Senate leadership so that the 44 Republicans and 1 Democrat would not have to vote publicly for the expanding Afghan opium production.
Oh yes, as you might guess, the lone Democrat was Ben Nelson of Nebraska.
