Are you having difficulty viewing the Latest Page and Homepage?
Yesterday we made some minor changes to our site which apparently are causing problems for some visitors. If you are having problems, please post in this thread and include the following information:

Which operating system you are using: Windows XP, Mac OS X, etc.

Which web browser you are using: Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.6, Internet Explorer 6.02, etc.

Thank you for your help.

10. YES! I'm so glad to know that it isn't just my own computer!
All of a sudden yesterday the home page and latest page stopped behaving normally. Now the "blogads" portion of the page takes up almost 2/3 of my window, and I have to slide the bottom scroll bar way to the right to see just ridiculously skinny columns of homepage posts and latest posts.

I am using Windows 98 (don't laugh, it cuts way down on virus problems) and Netscape 7.1 (the highest Netscape version that Windows 98 will support). I generally do just fine with these ancient artifacts -- I live in a rural area with only dialup available, so I make do.

Hope you can fix the current weirdness!

I just had to shut off the ads, don't want to, like to leave them on and help generate income for the DU.. I think the SHOPZILLA ad is screwing with PCs --

Hope this helps, and if I hear the SHOPZILLA ad is gone I'll turn the ads back on and help,

Thanks Skinner

On Edit, IE 6.02

32. I agree with the Shopzilla assessment
I too kept the ads on to generate income for DU, however, a week or so when that initial Shopzilla add (when you first jump in to DU before you can log on) showed up...BLAMMO.

I had to turn the ads off, but I still get some weirdness from time to time on the Home page when first jumping in...mostly freezing of DU.

XP pro with all the service packs and latest security patches, Symantec Internet Security 2006 updated daily and current subscription, IE 6.0.2900 sp2, on a braodband connection with a clear cache and cookies folder.

Intermittent problem as well...not every time

Also recently (very) even if I am logged out, when I jump back to the home page, later, it indicates I am logged in, until I surf a little bit, then poof, I am not logged in. Again, intermittent.

Hope this helps

13. Home page essentially unviewable.
I'm using Mozilla 1.7.2 on a Win98SE platform. The center column is farrr too wide to view ... even in a window that's 75% of the width on my 1280x1024 monitor. Scroll bar is about 50%. Unviewable - I don't waste my time on such screens.

2/3 of the window is the blogads portion, have to scroll way over to the right to see anything else, and the columns are absurdly skinny.

20. You're dial-up. I'm low-speed broadband (115kbps).
It's possible that the web server is dropping connection too soon, I guess. I see the blogads column appearing first and filling most of the window ... then shifting left as the screen builds column-by-column. There might be some interfenence/time-out on the Google-ad-server, too. Server loads and logical session time-outs play havoc on slower/loaded connections, imho.

24. "logical session time-outs" -- ouch, it makes my head hurt!
I *think* I get what you're saying, though. Used to be the blogads column would fill the screen and then move left, just like you're saying. Now it doesn't move at all, just stays there hogging most of the window once the page stops loading.

As a DU donator star-holder, I disabled the google ads as soon as that option was available, so I'm not sure I understand what their effect might be. But I know you're a really smart guy, so I'll happily assume you know more about this stuff than I do -- since I know nothing. ;)

29. I won't try to go into "logical sessions" as implemented ..
... on the Internet, whose protocols are not based on connections or packet sequencing. It's a technical issue ... and the appearance of connections and sessions (akin to the ol' point-to-point time-sharing connections) is something casual users rely upon as a model for "good enough for government work" use.

Regarding the Google ads, however, the ability to forego their display apparently doesn't eliminate interactions with the Google ad servers. I have them turned off, too, but I frequently see pauses on DU pages while "Waiting for http...." appears in the status bar, indicating an interaction with one of Google's servers. The 'logic' of the DU pages apparently continues to permit such interactions even when eliminating the resultant ads. When those servers are loaded, it slows down DU access. Such slow-downs can contribute to cache flushes and logical timeouts.

view on homepage and "latest" not loading. It seems to be better in the last few minutes, though. Although slow loading between "Home Page" and "Latest" with lots of yellow background and a column of ads down the middle.

59. Delays on 'stats.blogads.com' and 'cache.blogads.com' and ...
... a google (long name) server. Those delays could (iirc) result in session resets on a busy server, necessitating a (shiftless) refresh/reload that uses the user's cache but has a second 'go' at the source material. It's been a long, long, looong time since I've been "hands-on" with server technologies, but the mix of servers and the traffic can cause connection resets, iirc. It's likely that the problems are far more evident on slower user connections (i.e. dialup) and with older browsers that don't handle the (multi-)threaded fetches well.

No problems, but when trying to go to the DU home page, there is a very quick window, about 6" high and 2" wide, that looks like a joker or something. Can't tell if it is an ad or not because it goes so fast. Maybe it is hanging some people.
