Taliban resurgence: suicide bomb attack kills US troops

The deadliest suicide bombing in the Afghan capital since the fall of the Taliban five years ago killed at least 16 people near the American embassy just before noon prayers yesterday.

Up to seven foreigners were killed. "I can confirm there are two US servicemen killed and two wounded," a coalition spokesman, Major Thomas Collins, said.

More than 2000 people have been killed this year in a Taliban resurgence which has brought the heaviest fighting since US-led troops toppled the hardline Islamists in 2001.

Returning from a visit to Afghanistan, General James Jones admitted he had been taken aback by the ferocity of violence in the south.
