Did You All See The "Christ On The US Flag" 9/11 Memorial At The Vatican?
Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 12:46 PM by leftchick
I am speechless.....

A marble real size replica of Michelangelo's 'Pieta` statue, kept at the Vatican, shows a U.S. flag sculptured under Christ as it is paraded through the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy, Friday, Sept. 8, 2006. Italian contemporary artist B.Zarro sculptured the statue, 'Michael Angel's - the Universal Pieta`' as a monument in memory of victims of all the wars to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Sept. 11 terrorist attack in the United States. The title of the piece was coined by the artist not only in honor of Renaissance master Michelangelo, but also because Zarro discovered that the name 'Michael' was the most common amongst the US victims in Iraq. In the background is Santa Maria della Salute church. (AP Photo/Luigi Costantini)

It is a monument in memory of victims of all wars?? I guess showcasing the US flag is appropriate then. And bizarrely enough I found this in The Iraq Gallery at Yahoo! I guess even Yahoo is trying to make "that" connection.

2. Using the American flag as a burial shroud
What is the artist really trying to say here? Although given his name, I'm inclined to think this is parody.

6. Very moving, but...
I prefer Jesus and my country's flag to be seperated if at all possible.

10. The way this is worded is kind of confusing
The way I read it, the Vatican is only mentioned because that's where the real "Pieta" is displayed and this replica is being shown in Venice. Frankly, I would be surprised if the Vatican would put a tacky "Pieta" rip off like this on display.

11. That is no parody.
We know all of the words but we forget the feeling after 9/11. Virtualy every man woman and child on the face of the Earth stood with us. This wasn't make belive yellow ribbon allegiance. It was real and passionate.
Squandered in five years.
Shit.

15. The ORIGINAL is kept at the Vatican. This piece of art is in Venice.
YES, it's actually a memorial to "victims of all wars"--rather than to 9/11 itself. And he includes Americans who have died in Iraq.

This article (in Italian) shows more of his work. www.photographers.it/articoli/bizzarro.htm

Here's an explanation for the F104, seen above: ...crucial current affairs become a constant presence as in the art of B.Zarro who with his Trojan Horse, a real F104 fighter plane, denounces international intervention policy.
