Researchers identify "male warrior effect"
Researchers identify "male warrior effect"

NORWICH (Reuters) - Men may have developed a psychology that makes them particularly able to engage in wars, a scientist said on Friday.

New research has shown that men bond together and cooperate well in the face of adversity to protect their interests more than women, which could explain why war is almost exclusively a male business, according to Professor Mark van Vugt of the University of Kent in southern England.

"Men respond more strongly to outward threats, we've labeled that the 'man warrior effect'," he told the British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting.

"Men are more likely to support a country going to war. Men are more likely sign up for the military and men are more likely to lead groups in more autocratic, militaristic ways than women," he added.

Van Vugt said the finding is consistent with results from different behavioral science disciplines.

1. That's why women should rule the world.
PLEASE - for the sake of the planet! ;)

6. If women ruled the world, we'd have peace?
I think most married men would disagree on that... :P

2. LOL
War is almost exclusively a male business because we don't allow women into the 'club house'. I bet women would bond just as effectively as men, if given the thousands of years of warfare we men seem to 'enjoy'.

4. Not quite
I've read quite a few studies in the past that said in most natural disasters it's the women who hold together while the men are running around looking for something to blame or fight.

Women are also somewhat less susceptible to PTSD, although it does occur in both sexes.

I guess men come out ahead when there's a clear enemy that isn't a hurricane, earthquake, forest fire, or other disaster.

If it were worth our while to enter military service, we would perform just as well. War is "men's business" because we are not let into the club, not because we are "more nurturing" than men.

on edit: This professor is making these assertions based on 300 college sophomores who were dealing with money?! Oh, the reporting on this story is sloppy, sloppy...
