I sent an email yesterday to a list of supporters encouraging readers to send a message to ABC that the politicization of 9/11 is unacceptable. ABC's miniseries Path to 9/11 has been criticized on the right and the left because of its blatant inaccuracies and twisted facts. Scholastic Inc. has withdrawn its support for the film for which it had prepared resource materials for high school classrooms.
This is another instance of right wing extremists going too far and I'm glad that so many people have stood up to this. 34,000 people responded to my email and sent a letter to ABC. The DNC also collected signatures and today delivered over 100,000 letters to the network demanding this film be drastically edited or pulled from the schedule.
Perhaps you will remember a much smaller uprising occurred on the right when CBS was about to air a movie entitled, The Reagans. Some thought that the movie cast the former first family in an unflattering light. CBS pulled the movie and aired it on Showtime instead.
With the Path to 9/11 we are talking about a movie claiming to be based on the historical record provided by the bi-partisan 911 Commission - yet the inaccuracies and outright falsehoods that are reported to be in the movie are so loaded against Democrats that it begs the question, why air this movie at all?
We furthermore need to ask, why have so many advance copies been provided to right-wing websites, but a copy cannot be made available to the former President of the United States? A President whom, if reports are correct, is viciously misrepresented in this movie?
MoveOn.org is also starting to collect signatures in opposition to the film which is set to air on Sunday and Monday. ABC is under a lot of criticism, but has yet to demonstrate that it seeks to air a 9/11 movie that is a fair representation of the historical record.
I encourage you to sign these letters and petitions and to circulate them widely. Let's make our best effort to persuade ABC to make the right decision on airing this film.
