ABC Stands By Its 9/11 Story — Almost
After minor edits in response to Democratic critics, the miniseries will air as scheduled. It's already set off a bitter election-year dispute.

Walt Disney Co.'s ABC is forging ahead with plans to air a miniseries starting Sunday despite controversy over its efforts to dramatize — and some say unfairly politicize — the events leading up to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Producers said late Friday that they had finished making minor edits to "The Path to 9/11" amid a firestorm of protests from leading Democrats including Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, who warned that telecasting "right-wing political propaganda" might violate the terms of ABC's government-mandated broadcast license.

Critics say that, among other things, the film fabricates scenes and unfairly blames the Clinton administration for failing to capture or kill Osama bin Laden. The network, for its part, has urged critics to withhold judgment until the final version airs.

Whatever viewers ultimately see, it's clear that the five-hour $40-million docudrama, highlighting years of intelligence failures and political bickering before the attacks, has detonated an election-year bomb that's reverberating from Hollywood to Capitol Hill.

First...given the option of watching Sunday Night Football, the new season of The Simpsons (who ever thought Faux would be a worthwhile viewing alternative???), the Sopranos on HBO and dozens of other choices only those who really really care about this crap will watch...and that won't be many people I know.

Second...this will be 4 hours with no commercial interuptions...no potty breaks and from what I can see a very tedious and ordinary production. This isn't Saving Private Ryan or any movie that will live beyond its controversy. Anyone who sits through all this crap deserves a lifetime supply of kool-aid.

Third...I like seeing the fire in people's belly this thing has set up. Now let's take that energy and put it to some real use. Instead of sitting in front of the tube this weekend, get involved. If you're not already volunteered with a local campaign...do it NOW!!! If you are involved, go out and canvass, make the calls, update the voter rolls...take that energy and turn it into Democratic votes...there's precious time left and the sweetest revenge to ABC will be best serve cold...a Democrat controlled House & Senate.

The camera work--that cheesy, faux-realistic bobbing hand-held style--got hella annoying after about 30 seconds.

Seriously, anybody with a tendency toward motion sickness will switch channels in no time. And anybody with better things to do will soon follow.

I'd be more concerned if this were a well-made, entertaining movie, but I'm thinking that ABC will get hit with the triple whammy of low ratings, a boycott, AND lawsuits.
