IN NEW LETTER - CLINTON'S LAWYERS DEMAND ABC YANK FILM!

In New Letter, Clinton's Lawyers Demands ABC Yank Film
By Greg Sargent |

On Friday evening, Bill Clinton's lawyers sent a new letter to ABC chief Bob Iger demanding that ABC yank "The Path to 9/11." We've obtained a copy of the letter, and it reads in part: "As a nation, we need to be focused on preventing another attack, not fictionalizing the last one for television ratings. `The Path to 9/11' not only tarnishes the work of the 9/11 Commission, but also cheapens the fith anniversary of what was a very painful moment in history for all Americans. We expect that you will make the responsible decision to not air this film."

The full text:

Dear Bob,

Despite press reports that ABC/Disney has made changes in the content and marketing of "The Path to 9/11," we remailn concerned about the false impression that airing the show will leave on the public. Labelng the show as "fiction" does not meet your responsibility to the victims of the September 11th attacks, their families, the hard work of the 9/11 Commission, or to the American people as a whole.

At a moment when we should be debating how to make the nation safer by implementing the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, "The Path to 9/11" calls into question the accuracy of the Commission's report and whether fabricated scenes are, in fact, an accurate portrayal of history. Indeed, the millions spent on the production of this fictional drama would have been better spent informing the public about the Commission's actual findings and the many recommendations that have yet to be acted upon. Unlike this film, that would have been a tremendous service to the public.

Although our request for an advance copy of the film has been repeatedly denied, it is all too clear that our objections to "The Path to 9/11" are valid and corroborated by those familiar with the film and intimately involved in its production.

-- Your corporate partner, Scholastic, has disassociated itself from this proect.

-- 9/11 Commission Chairman Thomas Kean, who served as co-executive producer on "The Path to 9/11," has stated that he raised concerns about the accuracy of several scenes in the film and that his concerns were not addressed during production.

-- Harvey Keitel, who plays the star role of FBI agent John O'Neill, told reporters yesterday that while the screenplay was presented to him as a fair treatment of historical events, he is upset that several scenes were simply invented for dramatic purposes.

-- Numerous Members of Congress, several 9/11 Commissioners and prominent historians have spoken out against this movie.

-- Indeed, according to press reports, the fact that you are still editing the film two days before it is scheduled to air is an admission that it is irreparably flawed.

As a nation, we need to be focused on preventing another attack, not fictionalizing the last one for television ratings. "The Path to 9/11" not only tarnishes the work of the 9/11 Commission, but also cheapens the fith anniversary of what was a very painful moment in history for all Americans. We expect that you will make the responsible decision to not air this film.

Sincerely,

Bruce R. Lindsey
Chief Executive Officer
William J. Clinton Foundation

Douglas J. Band
Counselor to President Clinton

It's a very good idea to keep pounding away, and to not give up.

I hope they will proceed with a lawsuit if necessary.

nothing to lose.

I believe Mssrs. Lindsey and Band will be getting a prompt reply from ABC/Disney.

Good for Bill Clinton.

the dittoheads will proclaim that the whiny liberal cry babies have won again, and we hate America.

If they don't pull it and lawsuits ensue:

I almost hope they do air it just so we can see the flood of lawsuits here and in England. Better than Monica Gate, that's for sure.

36. Disney hates Americans.
That must be why they lie to us in their "historical" movies.

Pocahontas did NOT marry John Smith as Disney told us in the movie, she married John Rolfe. See the following link for a brief history. http://www.educationalsynthesis.org/famamer/Pocahontas/Poca-bio.html

T. C. Williams High School was not integrated in 1972 as Disney told us in "Remember the Titans." T. C. Williams was never segregated. It opened it's doors to 9th, 10th and 11th graders in September of 1965. It was the newest of three high schools in Alexandria, Virginia that year and it had a slightly higher African American percentage than George Washington High and a significantly higher percentage than Francis C. Hammond High.
In 1972, T. C. Williams became THE High School. It contained only 11th and 12th grades. All students in the Alexandria Public School System graduated from only T. C. Williams. The other two high schools taught 9th and 10th grades. The school system has reorganized the grades several times since then and TC has been enlarged to accommodate more grades, but it remains the only Alexandria Public high school.
http://www.acps.k12.va.us/profiles/tcwilliams.php

There may be other Disney movies pertaining to Virginia, but I can't think of any at the moment. Disney does not do history very well. No one should ever take a Disney production as anything but fiction, but they do. For the rest of our lives, people will be citing the 9/11 docudrama as the true history of events.

Several years back, Disney wanted to build a History Theme Park near Manassas. The local residents and a multitude of historians were able to block that venture.

I was just commenting on the Virginia history Disney Studios has slaughtered.

Maybe someone from the volunteer state can send you a few links with the facts on Davey.
I think I remember hearing the theme song for that one a few years before the show. Disney must have paid for the rights to use it. Walt was still in charge back in those days. It may have been a matter of further embellishing an already embellished hero of the frontier.
I don't remember if Disney also did Daniel Boone. (NC and KY)

...a fictionalized book that came out soon after 9-11 occurred that has been discredited as a RW piece of propaganda also. Anyone recall the title and author of that book? It's been pushed on RW blogs for the past 4 1/2 years and is a total fiction also.

16. They also defame AMERICAN AIRLINES
They ascribe an incident with US Airways to AMERICAN.

They got EVERYTHING wrong, it seems...

http://americablog.blogspot.com.nyud.net:8090/uploaded_images/americanairlinesatta-798420.jpg

Here's what the "Path to 9/11" claims American Airlines did on the morning of September 11. According to Disney/ABC, American Airlines had Mohammad Atta at its ticket counter and a warning came up on the screen when he tried to check in. The AA employee called a supervisor who kind of shrugged and said, blithely, just let him through. The first employee, shocked, turned to her supervisor and said, shouldn't we search him? The American Airlines supervisor responds, nah, just hold his luggage until he boards the plane. The scene is clearly intended to make American Airlines look negligent.

Only problem? It never happened.

First off, Disney/ABC got the airport wrong. The warning for Mohammad Atta's ticket popped up in Portland, Maine, not at Boston Logan as the tv show claims (this is on page 1 of the September 11 Commission report).

Second, the security rules at the time said nothing about searching a passenger who has a "warning" pop up, they only required that the bags be held until the passenger boarded. The Disney/ABC tv show, on the other hand, clearly tries to imply that American Airlines violated the security rules in letting Atta go. This simply isn't true. (This is also on page 1 of the report.)

But most importantly, Disney/ABC implicated the wrong airline.....

21. One of the things I can't figure out is why people, including most here,
don't understand that a DOCUDRAMA is kind of documentary. Docudramas are based on fact, not fiction. That's what makes them docudramas.

People are letting them get away with insinuating otherwise.

31. Docudrama is meaningless
it's like saying you're going to go ride your "FishHorse".. is it a fish, NO. Is it a Horse? nope..

Being one thing precludes the other, Documentaries are based on facts, drama is something that is DRAMATIZED or made FAKE by the addition of nonfactual fantasy.

The word docudrama is a Dodge. There's really no such thing.

Calling someone a DETAINEE means they don't have any rights, might as well call them a DUCK and EAT THEM, because people EAT DUCKS :)

MockYOUdrama is more like it.

Personally, I recommend a Bugs Bunny marathon. This suggested series of short dramas contains somewhat more factual reality, and it treats its watchers with much more respect.

(Notice I did NOT recommend a Mickey Mouse marathon, for obvious reasons.)

49. Bugs Bunny is WB, so it'll never happen.
But really, they could air the Lion King or even Mickey and it would be ok because it would be harmless animation instead of delusional fantasy. I'm basing this on a conversation I had once with a muralist in Mexico who told me he painted murals of pretty things to reclaim the public space for art, not political or commercial ads. I think it would be ok to support Disney's art if they pulled their political BS from the airwaves.

(Yes, yes, I know... some people see danger in every Disney venture, but but before you flame me, recognize that every person and every company works from its own perception of the world, and isn't a Mickey-centric perception less dangerous than The Path to 9-11?)

I guess I am simply tired of keeping silent while the GOP gets away with their lies.

Personally I am hoping that most people have better things to do with their lives than waste five hours on this crap, no matter how much hype has surrounded it.

For others hopefully they are too lazy or have too short an attention span to sit through five hours.

Then of course their is America's love and obsession with football. It has always I have to be honest, puzzled and yes even kind of frustrated me before. I've always thought, IMHO, that we place to heavy a priority on sports, but right now am I am really thankful for it and banking on it, to help keep away the vast majority of the audience, from the crock piece ABC is airing.

35. Why does everyone here
Edited on Sat Sep-09-06 09:37 PM by whereismyparty
equate this letter with an upcoming lawsuit if ABC does not comply? Personally, I haven't seen that kind of mojo coming from democrats in ages. We're talkin about the same Bill Clinton who supported the war in Iraq and is now buddies with Bush, remember? I think the movie will get aired. Democrats in office will rattle some sabers. Clinton will speak out. Everyone will express outrage and that will be that. The anniversary to 9/11 will be over and everyone will move on.

I guess I am just jaded by now. Diebold, 911 Commission lies, Iraq War resolution, tax cuts. Democrats just don't have spines anymore.Hence my handle on this site: where's my party?

I think the best we can do is to promote the TRUE story of the path to 9/11 -- the newly released documentary 911: Press For Truth. Let's face it, The Family Steering Committee knows more about what led up to 911 than anyone. Let's give them their day! Let's give them some free advertising by pushing this movie while dissing the ABC one. (By the way, I'm not associated with this film in any way. I just want to see it get wide distribution.)

39. Too harsh. Un-called for.

Many people get or feel that this party and our DEMs are just noisemakers and that no one is getting anything done. Unfortunately it is a possiblity in this case, however, we all hope that justice will be served, some are tired of waiting for it. There is a point where being hopeful just hurts too much for some when it comes to the usual DEMs doing something unusual.

AND the recommendation for www.911pressfortruth.com is not ANYTHING a freeper would push. It has --- what are those things called again? --- oh yeah, FACTS.

I know when Hillary pulled her support off a vote reform bill she co-sponsored and then took money from FAUXman Rupert, I have been unable to even look at any thing that comes out of her office. I feel way betrayed. I don't know that she's crooked or anything, but I do not have any trust for her because of those things.

".....In fact, based on our review, the program is full of inaccuracies and partisan misrepresentations. Put simply, the scenes depicted in the ABC movie are not consistent with the finding of the non-partisan 9/11 Commission Report. "

And I thought, Wait a minute, you are upset because ABC is telling even more lies than the 9/11 Commission?

47. I'm still waiting for the "If you air this film, ____ will happen" letter.
I wish one of those being slandered would spell out some negative consequences for ABC.

"... We expect that you will make the responsible decision to not air this film."
isn't strong enough, IMO.

They need to tell ABC what will happen if the crap is shown here.

... They do have a strong case regarding the thing being pedaled as "the official true story" overseas.

48. Kick because we need to see something being done about this
sickening mockery and lie for a 5 year 9/11 Memorial, and for the future of our Democracy.

56. Berger's case
Looks to me like Sandy Berger may have the strongest case for a libel suit. Why doesn't he ask a court for an injunction against the broadcast, claiming irreparable harm from the libelous telecast? That could stop the telecast from airing, at least temporarily.

61. Got A Letter from the Syracuse

ABC affiliate

The GM said, they appreciate my comments but they felt that since the event effected all Americans, they need to present all the information possible on 911, and let people decide for themselves.

I was going to write back even if the information you are presenting is blantantly false? But why bother, they will just continue to come up with justifications for their despicable actions.

I just hope their nasty little trick back fires on the American Bushit Company and their affilates, and the Rethuglicans.
