I sent this:
As you well know, I've been a big fan of KDRV for many years. I have admired your quality local broadcasting and your commitment to our community. Sadly I find myself at odds with any station that will broadcast ABC's blatantly political and terriby flawed "docudrama" on 9-11. I think this is where community service and corporate greed must part ways. I realize that your station owner is a major supporter of the Bush administration, but that is no justification for leaving the truth on the cutting room floor. If KDRV airs "The Path to 9-11", I will finally have to abandon my last hope for commercial broadcast television . I suspect that you are not thrilled to be in the position your network has put you. I have made some unpopular decisions that cost me clients but preserved my integrity. This might be your opportunity to do likewise. I hope you can find this in the midst all the angry email you must be receiveing.
I got this response:
Thank you for sharing you well written note regarding “The Path To 9/11”. I intend to forward your comments to the ABC Network (especially since they are still in the final edit of the project). On Monday, Part Two will be followed by a special edition of “Primetime Live”, an electronic town meeting. From talk shows to internet blogs, the discussions about “The Path To 9/11” have generated much heat, but precious little light. It has been interesting to note that viewers who have contacted us arise from two distinct camps: pro-President Bill Clinton and pro-President George W. Bush. That’s correct; both sides have been complaining.
After reviewing a rough edit of this mini-series, the management feels strongly that viewers should decide for themselves the merits of this program. This morning the Chairman of the 9/11 Commission agreed that the program deserves airing to impress upon the citizenry the importance that Republicans, Democrats, government officials and even everyday citizens take responsibility; share the blame; and work together to avoid another 9/11.
I need to point out to you that “corporate greed” plays no role in either ABC’s decision to air this program, nor in our decision. The program is airing commercial-free. I also need to point out that the personal political philosophies held by my ownership has never influenced our programming, nor would I expect it ever to do so.
I replied with this:
Thank you for your prompt response. I realize that ABC is giving away the air time on this. I refer to corporate greed becaue the only logical reason ABC would have to disregard the facts is that this piece is intended to keep those in power who have been very friendly to the corporate media. Sumner Redstone has admitted that, although he is a Democrat, he supported Bush as the best thing for his company. I have seen the previews and read comments from people involved in this production. It is clear that truth was not as important as making a political statement. With this country torn apart by an unnecessary war and too many believing that the war has anything to do with 9-11, this kind of bogus journalism is wrong.
