This ABC/Disney thing doesn't bode well
At the height of their power, the right wing was able to force Dan Rather from CBS and prevent CBS from airing a biopic about Reagan on their network. We on the other hand, even with the very vocal support of prominent Democrats, have been unable to get ABC or Disney to do much about Path to 9/11. Part of the reason, I think, is that so many progressives have made it clear they will not boycott Disney or ABC, and think the right of those who use our airwaves to lie to the American people is an issue of freedom of speech. But, nevermind that. We are faced with the fact that the rewrite of history will be broadcast.

As a result our failure, not only is Path to 9/11 going to broadcast, but it will get an added boost as Bush delivers a speech right in the middle of it. Obviously, this was all carefully planned in collusion between the White House, Disney, and the religious right.

What are we going to do about it?

2. WE ARE GOING TO BOYCOTT DISNEY 106 DAYS BEFORE XMAS!
We are going to have ourselves a splendid boycott and hit them on all their platforms where it hurts in a nonpartisan way.

Merry Disney-free Christmas!

If you think about it and if we do this right, next time someone tries to manipulate us via 9/11, they'll think "remember what they did to Disney!" and they'll think again.

BOYCOTT DISNEY. RESPECT THE FAMILIES OF 9/11

passing out flyers as to why others should think twice before spending money with them. AND people at toy stores pasing out flyers asking them to NOT purchase any Disney toys, stuffed animals, dolls, etc.--also picketing the toy stores--for carrying Disney items.

That WON'T look good. Toy stores being picketed during the height of the shopping season.

Picketers at Disney, Toys R Us and Target should suffice...;)

I think we can still gain the upper hand, but due to

2) the late effort by the Dems to stop it, the best we will be able to do is get the story out after it shows.

No one talks much about what "they" are afraid of. But they are afraid of losing power, and that is what is happening to them.

Never too soon to have the kids and gramps and grandma have the fruits of the new propoganda technology.

Then I am going to sit with the whole family around our new Apple media center that downlaods ABC/Disney Christmas cartoons animated by Pixar that show Disney's latest take on the real reason Christ was born with John Stossell....boy that guy digs deep and gets the truth. Thank baby Jesus for Disney.

Later on the Disney Family Channel we will watch Pat Robertson give official blessings to the ABC/Disney board, which without them buying his network, he could not afford to redistribute his booty to the needy.

The night will be capped off praying to an image of Steve Jobs that will be aired continuously all Christmas/Disney Day!

That is,

2) While simultaneously getting the GOP Base motivated by throwing them some political red meat vis-a-vis: "it was Clinton's fault." (a GOP Win)

Its a Win-Win for the GOP.

1. The people who control Disney are ideologically aligned with the right in terms of corporate influence.

2. They don't take us seriously, because they think that liberals in general don't get as angry at them as conservatives. Although I think this is starting to change.

45. Maybe I'm too cynical, but I don't think a fear of a boycott
carries much weight anymore. If anything, we boycott too much, and so diffuse the tactic's power.

I mean, of *course* we must buy stop buying stuff from companies that suck! But...I have never liked Disney or network television and so cannot boycott a thing I don't use, and I'm not the only one.

But I think that whoever's backing this thing -- because ABC must benefit from it, most likely monetarily, but maybe in other ways too (access? I really don't know) -- just holds way, way, way more power than millions of Americans do. That sounds nuts, but I think that's what it's come to.

I think the Internet is our greatest weapon -- it's practically our only weapon, our only way of getting truth out. We need to keep blogging, keep writing, and keep getting the word out to people.

As a ardent Disney fan I know personally how many fans they have. I also know that a sizable amount of them are Dems who are pissed.

I think you make an interesting point about the power of boycotts. But how many do you know of that are organized and consistent?

I honestly don't recall a concentrated boycott effort like the one we put forth for Sinclair. But, since I found out about Buyblue.org I've made an effort to NOT shop places that are HUGE GOP contributers, like Home Depot. Well, I recently heard they filed for bankruptcy so apparently some others aren't shopping there either. Maybe it is working on some level.

I believe that this CAN work. But you are of course entitled to believe it won't. :)

For people to state they will also be boycotted for airing this thing?

I tried to start a thread Thursday (I think), but it didn't get many hits. I think people were really distracted, and focused on ABC/Disney, no one even had the energy to think about Apple's role in all of this.

I'd love for them to be as swamped as Disney has with all of this. I tried to call Apple and couldn't get through.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2074866

Take the contact information from it (cut and paste)if you'd like, and start a new thread, stating they are distributing and request DU'ers contact them by e-mail over the weekend, phonecalls on Monday...letting them know they too will be boycotted, etc.

:hi:

Trying to get off here. lol.

58. Thank you for your support...!
:hi: That helps!

On home depot, hmmmm. I went looking for info. and all I could find was this:

http://www.11alive.com/money/money_article.aspx?storyid=84037

stating that they are downsizing and cutting many employees from their Atlanta corporate offices. So maybe they are, maybe they aren't.

Spread too thin? In terms of opening too many stores?

64. Yes, it seemed to me that Home Despots were springing up like mushrooms
for a while there. I think a lot of people were taking home equity loans and doing *a lot* of home improvement stuff. If the housing boom is cooling, and interest rates are rising, I suspect people won't be remodeling quite so much.

Does our town need our brand new HD AND a Lowes? I don't know; we got a long fine for years with just our little local hardware store. It seems like people will have buy a TON more hardware to keep them both in business.

We have a Home Depot that always seem busy. They are opening a Lowe's right across the street from them. We go to Osh. ;)

63. Besides permanently boycotting ABC and Disney?
I'd love to see something like this by MoveOn or a similar organization:

ANNOUNCER: (Name of celebrity), now that you've (won the Superbowl or some other accomplishment), what are you going to do now?

CELEBRITY: I'm sure as hell NOT going to Disneyworld!

ANNOUNCER: Why not?

CELEBRITY: By airing "The Path to 9/11," ABC and Disney intentionally presented a falsified account of a historical event and politicized a tragedy, not only failing in their broadcast duty to serve the public interest but also attempting to influence the upcoming election. At the very least, they deserve to be shunned.
