ABC and Disney Thank DU For All The Free Advance Promotional Hype.
Edited on Sun Sep-10-06 08:37 AM by Dover
That should be the headline tomorrow. You can't buy this kind of frenzied hype.

As Mel Gibson so efficiently proved....hype and controversy sell.
What if they made a movie and no one came? (as John Lennon might say)

Well done DU.

the Swift Boaters in 2004 worked REAL WELL for him.

16. The effort to
confront the lies contained in the ABC/Disney cartoon may not have stopped this. But it has done something of significance that should not be overlooked or discounted.

For many years, the alcohol and tobacco industries have made ads that appear in the various media which attempt to entice young people to give their product a try. It often goes beyond merely showing that "cool" people smoke cigarettes or drink ______ beer. There are tactics that are efforts to work on a subliminal level. (Of course many other industries do the same sort of thing.)

When parents or teachers or other people sit down and show young folk how the commercials are set up to try to trick them into buying certain products, an interesting thing usually results. Each time that young person sees that type of commercial, they are conscious of the gimmick. It doesn't mean that the young person will never be exposed to another ad in a magazine, on line, on the radio, or on tv. But it absolutely increases the chance they they will "just say 'no'," to borrow Nancy's infamous line.

The uproar over the lies in the ABC/Disney flick will likely have a very similar effect on the viewing audience. They are far more likely to not buy into the product being sold to the American public, by a group that is as reckless as the tobacco industry.

18. Is the alternative to follow the RW into forming a liberal militia and
threatening violence?

Indeed if peaceful protest does not work at all - as you seem to be suggesting, what would you suggest that might work to end corporate RW control of our lives?

28. Protesting a untruthful media event and demanding a retraction IS
constructive. "Rats ia a maze" are those who complacently sit back and let this drivel happen without voicing concern and outrage. "If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention" and if you're not reacting, you're not outraged.

5. DU is not THAT infuential......
The hype, controversy and promotional material are all inherent in the propoganda.

The forces behind this either hoped progressive forces were going to be suprise attacked, or else don't care, and figured this hub hub in as just a little extra bonus promotion.

I'd rather this take place with progressive forces kicking and screaming than sitting back and taking this massive attack. Extra coverage or not.

15. Who ever proved it happened at all?
Edited on Sun Sep-10-06 09:00 AM by Dover
By that I mean the purported hijackers's role.

I'm still waiting for that truth before I am willing to argue the merits of whether or which airline or other person is responsible. And this hype manages to shift attention to an issue that, at least in my mind, may or may NOT have ever happened...therefore perpetuating a bigger fiction as truth.

17. Oh, I see.....
You are arguing the merit of even challenging this version of the story because it may have never even happened - as officially presented.....

I see your point, but I can't imagine waiting for the truth to unfold on this issue - and all of the lies - by not protesting individual versions of the lie...

 :silly:

7. The truth about the lies got out. It's all over the Internet.
Edited on Sun Sep-10-06 08:47 AM by Hissyspit
When I googled, Media Matters and Think Progress came up. At least if people watch it now, they will have a sense that many people say that much of the mini-series is false. There really was nothing else that we could do and it was going to happen anyway.

11. It might be better
to stick with things that John Lennon actually did say, rather than try to associate him with things he didn't say. I think that is kind of the idea with this movie. Small world.

Lennon was willing to speak out against the violence and the lies associated with the war in Vietnam. He said that Yoko and he were willing to be the world's clowns to get the message out. And he also quoted the esteemed Dr. Winston O'Boogie: "A conspiracy of silence speaks louder than words."

20. I think you need to rethink this
To allow it to run without contesting the facts - (It was slanderous!) would have been a tacit admission of the story. The story portrays democrats as too weak to fight the WOT. It ain't just about the fuckin blowjob, there is the whole Clinton Administration being portrayed as weak.

We can debate how many would have seen it without the protest to it, personally I think even 1% of the voting population seeing it and assuming it was accurate is highly damaging. Because those 1% then spread the lie to another 2% and so on. THE LIE GROWS!

What we have now, is that anyone who has not already formed an opinion and watches the show, is likely to hear about the protest over the inaccuracies some time between now and the election assuming they are someone who votes and will watch some campaign coverage.

21. I agree....and that's sort of what happened with F 9/11
The RW took control and immediately put it into many Americans' heads that Farenheit 9/11 was full of lies, so they either didn't go see it or they did and they didn't believe any of it. In the end, it was not effective in helping remove * from office.

We are right to do the same thing here. We must put question marks in the heads of viewers if this movie does in fact blame Clinton for 9/11. If we don't dispute it, it becomes the truth.

24. Tell them we said "no problem" now we're armed and ready to
fight back and not roll over and take it Tuesday morning. Because the opposite of what is going on right now would be to let everyone watch the FakeYouDrama thinking it's something that would honor the people who died on 9/11 and believe the lies and deceit in it. I choose to be armed and dangerous, free advertising or not.

Is your first name Ben?

Disney, ABC, and my local affiliates. It felt better than doing nothing, for me.

Now that it is still going to air, despite the protests, is anyone else wishing that a combination good old fashioned laziness, short attention spans, or in the reverse people just being to busy to spend five hours this sucker, will sink this program?

I have heard some people say things like that all ready.
