Right Wing Mother Pleasantly Surprises Liberal Daughter
Last year one of my holiday gifts to my mom was a subscription to Jim Hightower's Lowdown newsletter. It's a quick read & Jim has a great sense of humor, fights for the common man & gets to the gut of the issues. He points out how our politicians have sold out to corporate money, especially the repubs, but he doesn't have any issue pointing out complicit dems. Yesterday I got an email from Mom saying she is surprised to find she agrees with Jim more than she disagrees with him. Then she went on to say that she caught Thom Hartmann on radio the other day & "He seems very reasonable. I liked him." ~gasp!!

B-)

4. Most folks who THINK they are conservatives
But maintain a some what open mind, or are just plain worn out by the unrelenting attack by the Bush Crime Family, and actually LISTEN and READ the opposition find that they have more in common with we progressives and "dern liberals," than they knew.

I don't remember to actual quote But Robert Kennedy Jr, put it some thing like this, "A Republican is just a liberal who doesn't know what's going on."

7. The labels of Conservative and Liberal.....
are outmoded.

Now it's more like a division between those who want an honest democracy which accommodates many differing views on how to solve our collective problems, vs. 1)Corporate apologists/enablers 2)Religious Totalitarians 3)Brown-shirt types who hate gays, people of color, foreigners, etc.

It's the unholy alliance of those last three that we have in power now. If the rest of us could unite against them........

2. My mom is waking up, too!
She's always been a Democrat but she's become quite brainwashed by her church and hasn't voted at all since her last vote for Bill back in 1996. (Must give her credit ~~ at least she didn't vote for Bush) But, I digress, because I couldn't believe that the woman who taught me the importance of voting hasn't practiced what she preached for the past 10 years! Anyway, she was in my car one day as I was listening to Randi Rhodes on XM and she REALLY liked her. So, to help her along with her non-church related political education, I went and bought a new XM radio, gave her my old one and added her to my family plan so she could listen as often as she wanted.

Well, she's definitely been listening to Randi and the rest of the AAR lineup and wanted to make sure she could vote in this election. In the end, I drove her to our local DMV and we have now added another vote for our Democratic candidates!

You go, Mom!!! :bounce:

3. Great!
My Mother-in-Law is awakening along with an Aunt who while a firm Republican stated flatly that "if there is a draft" she will pay for her grandson to go to Canada. The interesting point on this is that both She and Husband served in the USN in WWII, so these veterans have had about enough me thinks.

5. Perhaps a gift of Thom's book "What Would Jefferson Do" would bring her in
Could be a gamble that pays off.
