9/11/01 on Democratic Underground - a look back
Edited on Sun Sep-10-06 12:35 PM by Fighting Irish
I'm sure all of us remember what we were doing and where we were when we heard the news. And fortunately, this moment has been captured in time on DU.

So, straight from the deep archives, here's a look back at DU on September 11, 2001:

26.

I could have done a better speech speaking from my heart.
I'm behind him for now, but that was the worst "we've been attacked and we're going to strike back" speech I've ever heard. If I was going into battle I'd say I was demoralized by it...
Man, I get behind him, support him, and still he disappoints me.

45. Because we are truely the good guys and gals
we don't want to say a thing bad right now, and that is totally understandable. But now that we've pulled together we are looking at him with different eyes -- we're actually TRYING to support him as a leader and even with all that's gone on he is totally incapable of coming up to the bat. Once again, I will say I could have given more support filled speeches off the cuff.
It's really weird to spend one day hoping that the man you hate could lead you, and then being disappointed again when he fails in the one subject (defense) that his party is supposed to be great at. He ran for cover and that will eventually cost him after this is all over.

8. Wake up and smell the coffee, Chris
Atlant is right, that is what they want you to say.
In many ways (NOT that I am condoning it in any way) this is karmic payback for our national sins (and I don't think we're done paying, I'm afraid). We had a coup, we sat back and didn't stand up for our own vanishing rights. We watched IL Chimpe trample all over workers rights, human rights, civil rights, the environment and anyone and anything else that didn't have a large wad of cash...

Also, consider this, let's say you were a German and the Reichstag burned down in 1934. Would your response have been, "This is a German issue, lets put aside our differences with Hitlerites and find out who did this!"

Now, I'm not sure, nor will I state that I think the Bush Axis did this all themselves (10% possibility), but I believe it much more likely (40% possibility) that the Bush Axis knew this was coming and did nothing. Hell, they probably care more for the destroyed buildings than they do the dead, worthless serf/automatons.

The sad part is, for the first time in my life I can even conceive or would suspect our own people either doing this or standing by and letting happen.

But I can with IL Bushe. I most certainly can.

One other question, Chris: Which of our right/privacies will we lose over this one? Your naive as hell if you don't think the Bush Axis will target them in the wake of this tragedy. Hmmmm, sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Note: This is in the "Would this be happening if Gore was president" thread. General Discussion 1.

53. williampitt...let's get real
of course i support the american people which is one of the reasons why i don't support bush. and of course i condemn people responsible for this tragedy, but i may not support our response to it...i reserve the right to decide about that when it happens. however, i haven't supported anything bush has done, and i don't think he is legitimate, and until today you and most of the people here didn't either. that didn't make us any less american yesterday than it does today. i'm open-minded enough to support right action if i see it, even in an unelected pResident, however, to date he hasn't earned my support. now, i'm going to give blood.

and this is the tragedy: we've lost all the friends and supporters that we had worldwide at that moment. No one held it against us when we attacked Afghanistan. But when we went to Iraq, with the ruse of WMD, of Al-Qaeda - this is how we sank to the bottom.

42. Then you, and many conspiracy theorists on DU, were in the minority
And as long as many held this opinion, there is really no wonder why we - Democrats - keep losing in national elections.

Here is what E.J. Dionne Jr. - no right winger - writes:

WASHINGTON - The events of Sept. 11, 2001, are personal to every American. The day was not about politics or partisanship or elections. That's why the country, divided more or less 50-50 on political matters the day before the terrorist attacks, immediately drew together in sorrow, solidarity and determination. The rest of the world stood with us.

Five years on, you look at the rancid state of our politics, the decline in America's standing in the world and the behavior of our national leadership, and you want to shed tears for your nation. This year, so much of what's being said about the events of 9/11 is about the political survival of the Bush administration.

Listening to republicans call for blindly standing behind Bush, and in the next sentence blaming Clinton for these attacks is appalling.

It is obvious they have no problems with attempting to extract political gain from the tragic loss of american lives.

I spent much of that day on DU as I was at work and had no TV access.

One thing stand out - the chaos, even in the news reports. Car bombs, second plane hitting the Pentagon. THe confusion conbined with the horror is all coming back to me.

Both my kids lived in NYC at the time. Both towers had collapsed before they were able to check in with me. No words can describe what those in New York must have been feeling.
