I am awestruck.
I
ordered the DVD earlier today but didn't want to wait to see the film and I just finished watching it. It's hard to believe it's been 5yrs since this happened and how much my own recollection of that day and the events surrounding it have become cloudy in my mind.
I'm so glad this was made and am further sickened in what will be shown later this evening on ABC that's being touted as "the official true story" of 9/11. Official according to whom? Some right-wing asshole stuck on Clinton's penis? Who the hell made this guy the bearer of anything official? Wasn't anyone with any level of authority, that's for damn sure. And to think I just had what was probably the best vacation of my life in taking my daughter for a week of fun at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. How can a company that can do things so well in terms of entertainment and innocent dreams of pixie dust turn around and support such a travesty of a film that only serves to denigrate and further politicize the tragedy of 9/11?
So many questions remain unanswered, much less asked. There was no doubt that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor but there is immense doubt as to who was behind the 9/11 attacks. Omar Saeed Sheikh? bin Laden? Zawahiri? Atta? Pakistan's ISI? And just how much did the US gov't (going back to elements of the Clinton administration) know about what was planned and all of the interaction and financial transactions going on between Al Qaeda, ISI, Taliban, and the US?
The upcoming November elections are, imo, even more important than the 2004 election. For now we are facing threats of attacks against a more formidable "enemy", Iran. This country is in economic shambles regardless of what you see the stock market indices doing. Take away the hundreds of billions of dollars funneling into the defense industry and its massive complex, take away the hundreds of billions in gifts to the wealthy in the form of tax cuts, take away the trillions of dollars in gifts to the drug companies and energy companies and what's left? Massively spiraling debt, a stone-cold economy with the number of people living in poverty and lacking health care increasing by millions each year.
The neocons have sold this country to the devil himself in exchange for an attempt at US global hegemony. But the deal was one-sided and the neocons' dream is nothing but a nightmare that's made the world less safe and more prone to vicious attacks (both from terrorists and within from socially conservative fascists).
I am truly dumbfounded.
I've written countless emails to Reps. and Sens. I've written letters to the editor. I've signed petition after petition. I've donated money to worthwhile candidates. I've worked to educate right-wing friends and acquaintances against the perils of one-party gov't and control of the media.
I don't know what to do anymore.
I suppose civil unrest would be the next step but am I willing to go that far? I admit I'm not ready, at this point.
