Woah, just saw something on History Channel, United flight 23
from Newark to LAX on 9/11 about to take off, got a message from dispatch about hijackings, the pilot taxiied back to the gate and several 'unruly' 'middle-eastern' men ran off the plane & disappeared. Al-Qaeda "instructions" and false IDs found in their baggage, the guys were never found...

I NEVER heard this story before...did I just miss it somehow?
:eyes:

3. They just 'ran off the plane'? How'd they do that? I never heard
this story either; does this admin own a piece of the History Channel, and are they catapulting their terra propaganda in new and inventive ways? :eyes:

24. Actually the History Channel is owned jointly by
Disney/ABC, Hearst, and NBC Universal. It's part of the A&E Network. I personally think they show too much religious history. Lots of specials trying to debunk the Da Vinci Code seem to be on lately.

29. Yeah pretty much everything on TV will be crap these days
thanks to the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the Rethuglican Party. Cheap, repetitive programming that doesn't require much thought is all we will get from any of those greedy corporations. Infomercials, car chase shows, 25 channels of church crap, and opinionated propoganda that masquerades as news. The amazing thing is the whole country has developed a weird psychosis thanks to "that box" we call the TV. If we all just shut it off we could get our sanity back. The war would go away if no one watched it.

10. The (revisionist) History Channel has about as much credibility
as Bushco. If this were true, the talking heads would be using it. Also, if it is true, it's another Bushco failure. Why weren't they tracked down and questioned? Their baggage would be a big clue and a good place to start.

Sounds like a bunch of made up BS.

18. I know nothing about the 'History Channel', just happened to see it
they SAID the baggage contained Al Qaeda "instructions" and false IDs and authorities were never able to figure out who these supposed guys were. I agree it smells like a sardine factory but it sure seems odd this "information" (if any of it's true...or not, even) kept so low under the radar for so long.

13. Let's use a little common sense here.
First, if Flt 23 had been notified ofhijackings, and especially ifthey were suspect, they would NEVER have taxied back to the GATE! Think about it. When they are afraid of a problem on a flight, that plane is ALWAYS told to taxi and PARK at a remote section of somepart of the airport grounds. The authorities want to isolate it as far from everyone else as possible, until the problem is either confirmed or found to be false.

I have no idea how THIS kind of story ended up on the History Chanel, butbelieve me, even if the initial part of a warning to a flight was issued prior to takeoff, the rest of the story is bogus!!!!

21. good point!!
That's true........at that point, they would not have known if there may be a bomb onboard. Why would the bring the plane back without checking it out first?

22. I have no axe to grind here, but trying to be objective:
The way it was told is that the Captain made the decision to return to the gate. He HAS that authority under every FAA rule - he/she cannot be over-ridden. Maybe the story is completely made up...but if it is, why???...and by whom??? That's all I'm saying (asking, actually.)

14. Easy to find

Did a searh on 911 "Flight 23" baggage - lots of links

Here's one
http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/context.jsp?item=a091901abortedflights

It's in the section
"September 19, 2001: Unverified Reports of Additional Flights to Be Hijacked"

"There may have been an attempt to hijack United Airlines Flight 23 flying from Boston to Los Angeles around 9:00 a.m. Shortly after 9:00 a.m., United Airlines flight dispatcher Ed Ballinger sent out a warning about the first WTC crash to the flights he was handling (see (After 9:00 a.m.)). Because of this warning, the crew of Flight 23 told the passengers it had a mechanical problem and immediately returned to the gate. Ballinger was later told by authorities that six men initially wouldn’t get off the plane. When the men finally disembarked, they disappeared into the crowd and never returned. Later, authorities checked their luggage and found copies of the Koran and al-Qaeda instruction sheets. In mid-2002, a NORAD deputy commander says “we don’t know for sure” if Flight 23 was to have been hijacked. "

15. I don't buy this story at all.
Once the doors are closed, no one leaves the plane. Besides, have you ever tried geting off a plane? No way would a group of unruly men have run off - too many people would have been standing in the aisle jamming stuff into the oerheads!

17. it sounds fishy to me too!
For one thing, all of the hijackers that day, used their real names! No aliases or fake IDs necessary.

And even if these middle eastern guys were planning on hijacking the plane, why would they give themselves away....or draw attention to the fact that their plan failed by being unruly?

I suspect if the story is true, we would have heard about it long before now!!

19. I remember hearing about this at the time
they held the plane on the ground because of these guys who seemed to be another hijack team. However, after a few hours they let everyone go.

20. I watched Tom Brokaw last night
He had all the ATC's involved in tracking the hijacked planes, and there was absolutely nothing like this mentioned. God, it was a sad show, one ATC had to take 6 weeks off because of stress and depression...all are still very much affected by it.

32. So the ID's were false...
hmm...Interesting trend...

The BBC reported back in September 2001 that 6 of the hijackers were still alive:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1559151.stm

The Washington Post reported last Friday that the BBC retracted that article although no one can find the retraction and the article is tstill on their website:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/07/AR2006090701669_pf.html

Paul Thompson's website has a fascinating essay titled "The Two Ziad Jarrahs":
http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/essay.jsp?article=essayjarrah

And of course, my personal favorite ID story from 9/11 -- al-Suqami's passport surviving the inferno at the World Trade Center:
