*Bush* re: 9/11 "But the day ended on a relatively humorous note."
Edited on Sun Sep-10-06 09:39 PM by merh
Read how "moved" the *Bushes* were in a 2003 interview with Peggy Noonan for Ladies Home Journal - read how they laughed themselves to sleep while the rest of the nation was in tears.

The mockery of his "tributes" on the 5th Anniversary, not quite the same as the humor they recalled in 2003.

(snip)

Noonan: Have you seen your husband grow since September 11th?

Mrs. Bush: Sure. In a lot of ways we've grown up together, not just since September 11th, but since we married. But there's a certain seriousness in September 11th. When somebody you love takes this job, you always know there's a risk you're going to face really difficult times, and of course, we couldn't have predicted what we had to face, but you know that's a possibility.

Noonan: You were separated on September 11th. What was it like when you saw each other again?

Mrs. Bush: Well, we just hugged. I think there was a certain amount of security in being with each other than being apart.

President Bush: But the day ended on a relatively humorous note. The agents said, "You'll be sleeping downstairs. Washington's still a dangerous place." And I said no, I can't sleep down there, the bed didn't look comfortable. I was really tired, Laura was tired, we like our own bed. We like our own routine. You know, kind of a nester. Like the way things are. I knew I had to deal with the issue the next day and provide strength and comfort to the country, and so I needed rest in order to be mentally prepared. So I told the agent we're going upstairs, and he reluctantly said okay. Laura wears contacts, and she was sound asleep. Barney was there. And the agent comes running up and says, "We're under attack. We need you downstairs," and so there we go. I'm in my running shorts and my T-shirt, and I'm barefooted. Got the dog in one hand, Laura had a cat, I'm holding Laura --

Mrs. Bush: I don't have my contacts in, and I'm in my fuzzy house slippers --

President Bush: And this guy's out of breath, and we're heading straight down to the basement because there's an incoming unidentified airplane, which is coming toward the White House. Then the guy says it's a friendly airplane. And we hustle all the way back upstairs and go to bed.

Mrs. Bush: (laughs) And we just lay there thinking about the way we must have looked.

Noonan: So the day starts in tragedy and ends in Marx Brothers.

President Bush: That's right -- we got a laugh out of it.

And Peter Dauo of Salon gives kudos to DU
Democratic Underground has dug up a jaw-dropping 2003 Ladies' Home Journal interview with the Bushes. Salon

They say never forget 9/11, I agree but add to my reverence a promise that I will never let them forget their mockery and how they have used 9/11 for their political gain. After reading this interview, do you think he sincerely cares?

After all it's damn stressful to read a fucking Pet Goat book to second graders while our country was being attacked by some of his associates.

BIG difference. December of 2001.

History will show that the Bush/Cheney cabal was fully complicit in the attacks on America.

6. thanks for the reminder of the callousness, and the link.
He sincerely cares about no one except himself and those he can exploit. And those he can exploit he only cares about how he can exploit them. I am getting bitter, better be off DU soon, go cuddle with the sick kid (mono), or not.

12. You know what strikes me when I read this interview?
They knew they were safe inside the White House, they KNEW they were safe and didn't want to leave their comfy bed. The Secret Service didn't know they were safe, the Secret Service agents were trying to protect them but they didn't want the protection, they didn't need it, THEY KNEW they were safe.

On September 11, 2001, I was assisting my boss in a criminal trial in federal court. I watched the coverage of the first crash while getting ready to meet my boss at the federal courthouse. As soon as they showed the coverage, I called my boss to tell him what was happening (I knew he was enroute to the courthouse.) I told him we were under attack and asked him what I was to do. He said to meet him at the courthouse. I watched what coverage I could before I had to leave and when I got there, the US Marshals that monitor the doors were on edge and more focused than they had been the day before. I chatted with them a bit about what was happening and then I went upstairs. We were selecting a jury and the morning was spent in voir dire. During breaks the prospective jurors would go outside to smoke or get a coke or chat on their phones with family and friends. They were getting calls from their family members, worried about them at a federal courthouse insisting that they leave. The marshals came in to tell us about the Pentagon being hit and that Ashcroft had ordered the federal buildings closed and that the other judges were leaving the building. But our judge was not concerned, not in the least, it was as if he knew we were in no danger. He was very calm and unconcerned and he insisted we continue and we proceeded with trial. The courthouse was locked down except for our courtroom. At lunch we learned that the towers had collapsed. We continued until after 5:00 that day and when I got home, I watched the replays and realized all that had happened while we were locked in that federal building, defending our client and protecting his rights.

It was not until a couple of years later that it hit me, our judge was a hunting buddy with Scalia and Cheney. He knew.

I wear my tinfoil hat and I do believe LIHOP, I believe it because on that day, when all of the federal buildings across the country were closed by order of Ashcroft, the courtroom I was working in, the federal building I was at, remained open, the judge KNEW we were safe.

11. If ever anyone questions Bush's psychopathy--
hell, and Laura's too--just shove this under their noses.

The defining, core characteristic of psychopathy is the inability to have empathy.

This goes hand in hand with that comment about it being hard not to think of the victims.
Yeah, right.

42. plus the fact that Bush thought that we'd think it was amusing ...

This is one of the few times when he could have lied, in order to appear sensitive, and said that he and Laura lay awake all night, sobbing when they thought of those poor people on the airplanes and in the ruined buildings -- and I would have applauded it.

20. just the fact that he COULD and WOULD go to sleep is astounding . . .
in similar circumstances, anyone else in that position would have stayed on the job and grabbed a half-hour catnap here and there . . .

I certainly couldn't sleep that night, so HOW the President of the United States COULD after seeing what had happened is beyond my comprehension . . .

unless, of course, he KNEW what was coming -- and felt a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment . . .
