Email I received today from one of our progressive candidates trying to oust Ralph Hall. (If anyone wants to donate to a good candidate--I'm sure it would be welcome, he needs some help!)

Melancon for Congress Newsletter
September 11, 2006

Five years after the brutal murder of nearly 3,000 Americans, President Bush, Ralph Hall and the rest of Republican dominated Congress have failed to make us safer. The murderers who attacked us are still threatening innocent lives. Photo ops and sounds bites aren’t getting the job done. American voters deserve a government that diminishes our fear instead of encouraging it.

Immediately following 9/11, the nation and the world rallied around President George Bush. He seemed to understand the challenges facing the United States. On September 17, 2001, he famously stated that “we will not allow ourselves to be terrorized by somebody who thinks they can sit and hide in some cave somewhere. . . . I want justice. There's an old poster out west, as I recall, that said, ‘Wanted: Dead or Alive.’”

Just six months later Bush reversed course and said “I don't know where he is. I -- I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him.”

We now know that George Bush and Ralph Hall have cut and run from the hunt for Bin Laden.

Their failure to kill or capture him has unnecessarily dragged out this conflict. During World War II the United States defeated two industrialized countries on two continents in four years. Why is one man in a cave still thumbing his nose at America after five years?

Congress must demand three practical changes to make America safe at home and respected abroad.

Redirect America’s military might and intelligence capabilities from the civil war in Iraq toward Bin Laden and the murderers who attacked us on 9/11;
Implement the bipartisan proposal to secure America’s borders and ports; and

Fully man, train and equip America’s first responders, including the National Guard, police and firefighters.
It’s time to stop living in fear and start acting like Americans. As FDR so wisely pointed out, ‘We have nothing to fear, except fear itself.” Fear will drive us to tear down our precious republic before any third world thug could ever reach our shores. We need a tough, smart solution to terrorism that holds true to our values.

If you're ready for a New Direction, then you can make a difference right now!

Tell your friends and neighbors this candidate for U.S. Congress that will fight for them. Tell them to come out and VOTE November 7th!

I will fight for

well-paying American jobs
access to health care for all Americans
affordable energy
keeping Americans safe at home and respected abroad

Fighting for Texas Families,
